The Titisee in the southern part of Germany’s Black Forest is a little bit magic. There’s something about the combination of pure, glacial waters, the most sunshine hours of any place in Germany and the backdrop of one of the most mystical forests in the country that make the place different to anywhere else. When visiting the Titisee, the challenge is not deciding in which holiday home to stay, more finding one that is free during the time you wish to visit. A little forward planning will increase your enjoyment significantly. Try to avoid going in the last two weeks of July or all of August or any of the German school holidays in whatever season. Private Accomodation

Loads of German families have holiday homes in the Black Forest and around the Titisee that they use for a couple of weeks a year themselves and then rent out for the other weeks. They used to be rather difficult to find for foreigners, but now that things like AirBnb are widely used, it’s much easier to find a tiny place that suits you just right.

There are about 50 places available right near the Titisee, with many more on offer further north in the Black Forest. If you fancy your chances with Germany, the Titisee itself has its own site with accommodation listings, or you can just Google Ferienwohnung or Ferienhaus Titisee and see what’s what.

One thing to consider is the location of the accommodation. Some are right at the edge of the lake, while others are perched high up on the hill, surrounded by forests. If you’re not staying with a car, the beautiful view can quickly become isolating when you have to hike one or two kilometres down the hill to swim.

Vacation like a grown-up

When you want to push the boat out and snag more than 3,000 square feet just three minutes walk from the lake, the Le Maison is just the place. Leave holiday cottage kitsch behind and enjoy a modern, open-plan kitchen, a massive covered terrace and three super-luxe bathrooms. One of the rooms has bunks, but in general, Le Maison is a place for adults.

Stay in a family hotel

A few spa hotels aside, practically everything in the Black Forest, and indeed the Titisee, is kid-friendly, and this includes the accommodation. Availability aside, people visiting with children will have no trouble finding a Familienhotel to stay in, which is great since these hotels often offer full adventure and outdoor programs for kids of all ages lasting the entire week. Even regular hotels will have rollaway beds or multi-room suites to accommodate families.
