10 Things To See And Do In Titisee-Neustadt Black Forest

Titisee-Neustadt is a small place, so it won’t take long to get a good idea of what’s fun to do and where you can do it. Still, it’s sometimes nice to have a rough plan when heading somewhere new on holiday. Here are our 10 best ideas for what to do when you visit the Titisee.

Hike around the lake

The highest lake in the Black Forest is a little bit magical in and of itself, but when you hike around it, you’ll discover the most spectacular views of the area around. The most popular trail around the lake takes about 90 minutes, perhaps longer with smaller children. The trail is clearly marked, and any café or hotel near the lake can tell you where the nearest access point is.

Take a stroll on the Seestraße

For walks of a more leisurely nature, try the Seestraße Promenade. This pedestrianised area begins just a few metres from the train station and follows the north shore of the lake until you reach the forest. Cafés, bars, and small souvenir shops line the street and, of course, places to buy cuckoo clocks.

Rent a boat

You are welcome to sail your own boat on the Titisee, but seeing as they are usually a little heavier than international baggage allowance allows, it makes more sense to rent one. Children will love the paddles that look like real motor boats. For adults, opportunities to rent rowboats, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and motorboats abound.

Rent a bike

There are 8,000 kilometres of mountain bike paths in the Black Forest, so exploring the forest around the Titisee on two wheels is certainly possible. Those who prefer slightly less adrenaline can rent a normal bike, follow the Bähnle-Radweg path and take in breweries, waterfalls, farmyards, and a huge viaduct.

Go wild swimming

The obvious thing to do in a lake. Since it was formed by a glacier, the Titisee has unusually pure and clear water. It’s not the warmest fresh water around, given the altitude, but since the lake is situated in one of the sunniest parts of Germany, it gets warm enough in the summer months to indulge all your wild swimming fantasies.

Go skiing

You can’t ski on the lake itself, but in the neighbouring area you will find plenty of places to ski cross-country or downhill, or even try a traditional German toboggan. Steering and braking only with your feet is fun! All ski resorts in the area will have special programs for children, many of which are supervised ski schools so the adults can enjoy the slopes at their own pace.

Climb the Hochfirst mountain

At 1,190 metres above sea level, there is little else in the Black Forest that is higher. On a clear day, the Swiss and Austrian Alps can be spotted in the distance, and on an exceptional day even Mont Blanc. The mountain top can be accessed from the Titisee via the Freiburg-Lake Constance-Black Forest Trail, or from Neustadt via the Central Way. There’s a restaurant at the top, so plan on a restorative lunch.

Watch others jump off the side of a mountain

If you’re at the Titisee in winter, you’ll be able to watch ski jumpers hurl themselves off a mountain face for their own enjoyment. The Hochfirstschanze in Titisee-Neustadt is Germany’s largest natural ski-jump and regularly hosts top-level ski jumping championships

You’re on holiday. Most people who come to the Black Forest come to do some sort of physical activity, but that doesn’t mean you have to. Ski resorts usually have some sort of wellness program, or you could spend the day in the baths at Badeparadies Schwarzwald. There are even waterslides.

2. Shop for souvenirs at Brunner's World of 1,000 Clocks

This shop on the Seestraße Promenade is full of cuckoo clocks of all sorts, nearly all of which are hand-carved and hand assembled in the local area. If a clock is too big, or too expensive or too kitsch, the shop also has a whole floor filled with Christmas decorations all year round and a wide range of other Black Forest products.
