Whether you’re a life-long vegetarian or just looking for a break from all the Haxe and Bratwurst you find in the Brauhauses, Cologne has a ton of vegetarian and vegan restaurants and cafés that serve imaginative, delicious food. There’s even Europe’s first vegan burger chain. Here’s where to find them.

1. Bunte Burger

Restaurant, Contemporary, Vegan

Founders Mario and Ulrich grew up in Bavaria next to an organic farm. Around 2014, they started wondering if it was possible to make delicious colorful burgers without any meat. It turns out, it was, and Bunte Burger was born.

2. MakiMaki Sushi Green

Restaurant, Sushi, Vegetarian, Vegan

After 15 years in the traditional sushi business, MakiMaki decided to try something a little kinder on the rapidly depleting fish stock in the world’s oceans: vegan sushi. Baked tofu, seitan, avocado, onions, cucumbers, beet sprouts, and Japanese yellow radish all pinch hit for fish.

3. Café Fatsch

Cafe, Coffee

A lovely little vegan cafe run by a small collective of people who believe good food made with quality ingredients are important for a good life. Start with one of the quiches, burgers, or gnocchi and finish with the cake of the day.

4. Café Schnurrke

Cafe, Coffee, Vegetarian

Cats! And vegetables! Cologne’s only cat café also serves up delicious mixed salads and warm ciabattas during the week, and a lovely veggie breakfast on the weekends between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

5. Govardhan

6. Mashery Hummus Kitchen

Restaurant, Middle Eastern, Street Food

For a long time in Cologne, the only place to get good hummus was as a side dish in Turkish restaurants or as a topping on a döner kebab. The Mashery changed all that in 2016. Now anyone can get hummus and aubergine, Yemeni hot sauce, a Sabich sandwich, hard boiled eggs, or falafel.

7. Veedel Vital

Cafe, Healthy, Vegetarian

A salad bar in Südstadt, right at the end of Ubahn line 15. Fair trade coffee, Sriracha hot sauce and Italian, tuna, Mediterranean, fit and fruit salads served with a mammoth slice of toasted, fresh bread. Tostadas and paninis are also available.
