Designed-minded retreats on the banks of the Rhine and Art Nouveau villas make up the clutch of character-packed places to stay in the onetime capital of Germany, bookable on Culture Trip.

While often overlooked by tourists, Bonn stands among Germany’s more storied cities. Best known as Beethoven’s birthplace, the celebrated composer’s former residence at Bonngasse 20 is an apt shrine. It’s one of Germany’s oldest cities, too – founded in the 1st century BCE. You can still explore its medieval city walls, and for 50 years following WWII, it was even the capital of West Germany. Add world-class museums and a pretty riverside setting, and you’re replete with reasons to visit this Rhine city. But where to stay? Don’t fret, read on.

1. Bonn Marriott Hotel

If you’re not lucky enough to snag a room on a higher level, just head to Konrads Restaurant located on the 17th floor for great views with your meal. Surrounded by government and science institutes, the hotel attracts mostly travellers on business. But when it’s time to clock off, there’s a rather swish spa to help de-stress.
