Berlin is better known for its nightlife than its food scene, but the two complement each rather well. In recent years, burger joints have sandwiched themselves between the coolest neighbourhoods in the city, so here Culture Trip has picked the top 10 spots that’ll satisfy your cravings late into the evening.

Supreme

Supreme is a burger joint that lives up to its name. Located on Oranienburger Straße in Mitte, it doesn’t look like much from the outside, and could be easily disregarded as a bit of a tourist trap. However the substantial home-made burgers, grilled to perfection and smothered in sauces of your choosing are a cut above your average patty and well worth a try.

Shiso Burger

Restaurant, Asian, American

Aside from burgers, Berlin’s other burgeoning food scene is Asian cuisine, and Mitte’s Shiso Burger combines the two to great effect. This sensational burger restaurant adds Asian flavours to its meaty buns, and serves them in dumpling baskets. Angus or Wagyu beef patties are matched with fresh ingredients like kimchi or edamame beans, sandwiched between white rich-wheat buns, creating sophisticated burgers with a twist.

Lily Beef and Vegan Food-Club

Restaurant, American

Though Lily Burger in Prenzlauer Berg is a little on the pricier side, it makes up for it in size. The impressive FBI New York comes with a 200g (7oz) patty, and if that’s not enough for you, you can choose the Monster King Kong instead – it’s nearly two feet high and comes with 2kg (4.4lb) of meat. Oh, and they add a donut on top too, just in case you want to start with dessert.

Hirsch and Eber

For a more wild experience, try Hirsch & Eber (Stag & Boar). Based in Prenzlauer Berg, it’s made its name on the Berlin burger scene for its unusual meat offerings. The restaurant keeps things local, sourcing game from forests nearby for its wild boar burgers. All buns and sauces are also made on-site, and the interior and atmosphere feel just as authentic as its dishes.

The Bird

Arguably one of the most iconic burger joints in Berlin, The Bird now has three successful restaurants, but its flagship in Prenzlauer Berg is the one to visit for the full experience. It built its reputation on the exceptional quality of its meat, made from coarsely ground, dry-aged American beef, all served in an English muffin.

Grindhouse Homemade Burgers

Grindhouse Homemade Burgers is the kind of place where you’ll find something for everyone – making it an ideal spot for a big group of friends. Its extensive menu features three gourmet burgers in addition to its eight main beef combinations. And unlike many other joints, it offers plenty of plant-based choices, with three types of veggie burger. Don’t leave without trying the wasabi shrimp.

BBB Berlin

BBB (Best Burger in Berlin) lives up to name, both in food and atmosphere. All of its burgers come quickly and perfectly cooked, and there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. So for honest cooking with good beer and great music, make a beeline to BBB; they even have a lovely sunny terrace to enjoy in the summer, too.

BurgerAMT

Restaurant, American

For a true American-style burger, there’s no better place to go than the hip-hop joint BurgerAMT. Its name is a play on the German word Bürgeramt, which means citizen office. Like the real Bürgeramt, BurgerAMT has become quite the institution in Berlin, notable for its beats and heavily loaded concoctions including the smoky BBQ bacon burger or the halloumi burger, dripping with peanut sauce.

Kumpel and Keule

Restaurant, American

Located in Berlin’s Markthalle Neun (Market Hall Nine) – a historic food hall that re-opened in October 2011 – Kumpel & Keule is one of Berlin’s best artisanal butchers. Here you can order a dry-aged beef burger or premium wagyu special and watch while it’s freshly cooked on the grill.

Burgermeister

Restaurant, American

Located in one of the busiest nightlife areas of Berlin, Burgermeister is considered a pillar of Berlin’s burger scene. It’s housed in an old public toilet building, but don’t let that put you off. It’s the perfect destination for revellers looking for a cheap late-night snack as it’s open until the early hours. Order a simple hamburger and chilli fries, or step things up a level with the Master of All Classes – a hearty double cheeseburger with bacon, jalapeños and BBQ sauce.
