Once a wasteland of austere communist rule, East Berlin has since flourished with thriving businesses, a rule-breaking art scene and a host of incredible places to eat. If you’re serious about great food and memorable dining experiences, then this list will have you smacking your lips and calling for a reservation in no time.

1. Schneeweiß

Schneeweiß offers patrons delicious Alpine cuisine to be enjoyed in a fresh, white-walled and epically stylish environment. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the schnitzel is rumoured to be one of the best in town. Crystal lamps add a hint of glam to the dining ambience, while a pint of craft beer keeps things relaxed and cosy. It’s probably wise to book a table during peak times.

2. Reinstoff

For a creative culinary experience, head to Reinstoff in Mitte for a dish prepared by acclaimed chef Daniel Achilles. Besides the food, the setting is quite something too, as guests are invited to be wined and dined in a re-purposed light factory. This two Michelin-starred experience will cost you a pretty penny, but the subtle flavours and innovative food pairings ensure you won’t be disappointed.

3. Zenkichi

Zenkichi brings the best of Japan to Berlin. Try out their eight-course summer tasting menu or go for the Omakase Sake Pairing menu to tantalise the senses. Tim Raue’s artful creations are small and delicate, but will have your lips smacking with with the expansive flavours especially designed to delight your tastebuds. The restaurant is open for dinner only, and there is also a cheeky cocktail bar to make it the perfect dinner and drinks combination.

7. Restaurant Pasternak

Restaurant Pasternak is a charming Russo-Jewish dining room boasting chandeliers and a piano that both add a hint of old-world flair to this venue. Despite the light fixtures, the place is humble, like a grandmother’s house. Enjoy food and drinks on the beautiful outdoor terrace, or visit on Sundays when they do a really delicious brunch (but get in early!).
