The Best Craft and Micro-Breweries to Visit in Munich
The craft beer scene in Germany is a bit complicated, mainly because any beerish beverage that has more than hops, water, barley, and yeast isn’t legally allowed to be called beer and can therefore not be sold as such. However, brewers are creative people, and in recent years they’ve found a way around the 500-year-old law. Here are our favourite places to explore craft beer in Munich.
Tap House
Craft Ale Bar, Pub Grub
The best place in town to sample 200+ craft beers from local makers, like Camba Bavaria, and brewers from further afield. The chili con beer is a particular favourite, and there is an unusually large selection of Belgian beer as well.
Red Hot
Craft Ale Bar, Restaurant, Pub Grub
Get German and international beer with a side of chops and ribs, or veggie burgers if you prefer. As you might expect in a place where unusual beer is a feature not a bug, the vibe is relaxed and convivial.
Getränke Oase
Craft Ale Bar, Pub Grub
Excellent service and an extensive craft beer selection makes Getränke Oase something of a rarity in Munich. The place opens early, so there’s plenty of time to pop in during your wander around the city.
Crew Republic
Craft Ale Bar, Pub Grub
The Crew Republic Brewery is open only on Friday afternoons and a is a bit of a trek into northern Munich. The good news is, their Sour Black, Witbier, Foundation 11 pale ale and others can also be found at bars in the Innenstadt that serve craft beer.
Forschungsbrauerei
Craft Ale Bar, Pub Grub
This microbrewery in the south-eastern corner of Munich near the Neuer Südfriedhof (South Cemetery) is known for its very fine seasonal beer and excellent food. It’s a bit out of the way, but worth it for beer connoisseurs. Look out for the St. Jakobus Blonder Bock.
Weisses Brauhaus
Craft Ale Bar, Pub Grub
Schneider Weiss is a traditional, family-owned brewery that’s not afraid to create the future of German beer – something more unusual than you might think. Their Aventinus, Nelson Sauvin, porter, wheat, and eisbock beers are truly something special.
Richelbräu
Craft Ale Bar, Pub Grub
Founded by Günter Baumann 10 years ago in a house in a residential area of Munich, Richelbräu is about more than just beer. The house has become a sort of community centre and meeting place for locals. The brewers are unable to sell their beer or food onsite because of zoning regulations, but you can call ahead for an appointment to come for a tasting.
