Lyon is one large World Heritage site, centred around its impressive gothic cathedral and astronomical clock. But for something a bit different, the Musée Miniature et Cinéma showcases hyperreal reconstructions of famous locations and everyday French scenes from days gone by. With a city as varied as Lyon, it’s no wonder that its B&B options are diverse – from traditional, family-run places to the more contemporary, the best are bookable on Culture Trip.

Félix Dort is a modern and quirky B&B in a renovated townhouse, perfect for couples and sharers. If eclectic decor is your thing, you’ll love what they’ve done in the rooms – all are individually designed, with everything from chandeliers to antique pots and suspended bedside tables, pulled together by an eye-catching feature wall. It’s within walking distance of Part-Dieu train station, and if you want to cook, you can use the shared kitchen.

2. Aux Pierres Magiques

Bed and Breakfast

The Aux Pierres Magiques offers accommodation in a stone building that’s over 150 years old. This quirky former restaurant and stables has been transformed into a five-bedroom lodge, with jaw-dropping views of the Monts du Lyonnais on the second floor, and a party pad for up to fourteen in the separate cottage. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel’s restaurant or terrace, or take a leisurely stroll to enjoy the nearby nightlife.

3. Le Clos du Cher en Beaujolais

If you’re looking for a peaceful stay in Lyon, Le Clos du Cher is a family-run guesthouse where you bunk down in the owner’s home. Situated in the middle of Beaujolais vineyards, the pretty property has had two rooms converted into family accommodation. You can join the other guests for a fresh, locally produced breakfast in the communal dining room, or meet in the sociable hot tub, but if you want to explore there are plenty of treks and vineyards to visit in the surrounding area.

4. Hôtel Vaubecour

Bed and Breakfast

Hôtel Vaubecour bed and breakfast is in the centre of Lyon, just steps away from the Basilica of Saint Martin d’Ainay. Thanks to modern double glazing on the large windows, however, you’ll sleep like a log, insulated from the buzz of mopeds outside. Decor-wise, they’ve gone firmly modern, with a contemporary purple, white and grey colour scheme, and razor-sharp lines in the ensuite bathrooms.

5. Le Clos Feuillat

Bed and Breakfast

On a trans-France road trip? This place is perfect – just far enough out of town that you’ll get ample free parking, but close enough that you can whizz to the centre in minutes (the handy Dauphiné tram stop is just metres away). There’s an outdoor pool with loungers, and each apartment has self-catering facilities for lunch and dinner. Still, you shouldn’t miss the fab cooked breakfast that you can have either delivered to your room or on the terrace as part of your stay.

6. Villa Seignemartin

The pretty pink exterior of suburban Villa Seignemartin is surrounded by a well-manicured garden. It hosts three modest, but well-equipped rooms, all with a shower and TV. You’ll also have access to the terrace where breakfast is served, while it’s only a five-minute walk to Grange Blanche underground station, taking you to the heart of Lyon in no time.

7. Les Galets

You can admire the patchwork of Lyon’s downtown from your private balcony at Les Galets, at the top of a Haussmann building overlooking the Rhône. The modern decor is thoughtful and comfortable, with each room boasting an ensuite with a large shower and L’Occitane toiletries. Don’t worry if you need an early wake-up – the front desk will be happy to assist, with the friendly, bilingual staff on call all day.

8. Maison Mouillard

If you’re looking for something a bit different, Maison Mouillard is a fantastic, modern home that you’ll share with the friendly owner and his dog. Designed to his taste – with contemporary art, sculptures and lashings of zebra print – it’s eccentric, but not uncomfortable. Rooms are more reserved, and share an outside terrace with views of the pool. Bear in mind that the toilet is outside your door, so don’t get locked out if you need to go at night!
