Surrounded by woodland and greenery, Watermael-Boitsfort’s restaurants are a touch different from your typical Brussels bistros. Whether it’s through their leafy surroundings or their healthy kitchens, this collection stand out in the capital’s most tranquil commune.

1. Chez Josy

Restaurant, Healthy

Perfectly reflecting its green Boitsfort surroundings, Chez Josy is all about getting the best out of nature, the words ‘vitamin bar’ and the cute bees stamped on their gorgeous tall windows give that away in a heartbeat. This small joint at the heart of the commune attracts large crowds and is quite popular. Their cozy digs may be small, but their commitment to eating right and serving plates with all the colors of the rainbow is impressive.

2. The Lodge

Restaurant, French, Belgian

With its first floor restaurant and second floor lounge bar (which often transforms into a surprise dance floor at night), The Lodge is a place where you can happily eat and drink your worries away all night long. We especially recommend lunch among the trees on their terrace on a sunny day, where you can eat while overlooking the pond.

3. La Terrasse de l’Hipodrome

Restaurant, European, Belgian

Rising up like a fata morgana from the old horse racing track each summer, La Terrasse de l’Hippodrome has been a source of tremendous joy among Boitsfort’s residents. From May to July, an oasis of white tents, palm trees and sandy beaches appears out of nowhere to turn a little piece of Brussels into a Caribbean fantasy. Its restaurant is perfect for a relaxing lunch with friends and be sure to follow it with a cocktail in one of the beach chairs by the pool.

Gustine

Gustine, a haven for picky eaters, is usually packed at lunchtime, since they offer diners the opportunity to create a custom delicious sandwich. Of course, you start by choosing your bread, of which they have a huge variety. On chilly days, go for a freshly made warm meal or indulge in their signature brownie.

Restaurant, Belgian

At Au Grand Forestier, it’s all about location. On top of the delicious traditional Belgian cuisine, its majestic surroundings at the edge of the Sonian woods make this place extraordinary; walking around and crossing the statue-covered lawns will impress you before you’ve even set foot inside. With a heated terrace that offers seating all year round, this gem of the Niels family (which has been in the restaurant business for four generations) combines quality fare with breathtaking scenery.

7. Le Crabe Fantôme

Le Crabe Fantôme

If you’ve ever wondered what fancy dining on the inside of a ship would look like, you must visit Le Crabe Fantôme. Its several dining chambers are decorated in a style that that can only be described as ‘fisherman chic’, and each room has a nautically themed name, like the captain’s quarters, the promenade deck, the fisherman’s quarters and the bridge. You can also enjoy your seafood on the heated outdoor terrace.
