Vienna, the official and cultural capital of Austria, is a city of theatres and opera houses such as the imposing Wiener Staatsoper – many built in a grand baroque style – and it looks like a pricey place to stay. There are many luxury and boutique hotels, but plenty of brilliant budget rooms and modern hostels are available too. Here’s our pick of the best.

1. Joyn Vienna

Centrally located in the 10th district, Joyn is more than just a hotel. The modern and sleek apartments are not only suited to business travellers on extended stays, but also great for a quick weekend in the city. Rooms contain a private bathroom and shower, dining area, free toiletries and a fully equipped kitchenette with a microwave, dishwasher, cooker, cupboards and high quality utensils. Inside a peach-coloured 19th-century apartment building, Hotel Caroline is full of elegant Viennese charm. Located in the 10th district, a buzzing part of the city, it is close to the U1 U-Bahn station that will sweep you directly to the main tourist attractions. This is a family-run hotel, in the second district close to the lush green park of the Prater. The breakfast buffet is regarded as one of the best in town – a generous spread of home cooked dishes, with a wide selection of sausages and ham, eggs and pastries, and freshly baked traditional Wiener Semmel rolls. The rooms – there are 58 of them – are decked out in traditional Austrian style with wooden frame beds and floral curtains. There are also apartments available to rent with modern kitchens for extended stays.

14. Ruby Sofie Hotel
