The island of Utila in Honduras draws crowds of travellers keen to explore the surrounding reefs by snorkelling and scuba diving. There are plenty of other activities to keep you busy, too. Here are the best things to see and do on your trip.

Get a scuba-diving certificate

Utila is said to be one of the cheapest places in the world to get a diving certificate, and it’s certainly the biggest reason that people come to the island. Book a residential course for a week and you should be all set to leave with a qualification.

Deep-sea diving

Snorkel the reefs

Many of the most famous diving sites are equally accessible to snorkellers. If you haven’t got the money or the inclination to dive, take out a snorkel and mask and you’ll still be able to see some amazing marine life.

Diving with whale sharks

Swim with whale sharks

Utila is one of the best places in the world to see these, the biggest fish in the sea. These huge creatures are present all year round, but the best times to see them are from March to April and from August to September. Book a boat trip from the centre of town and within 20 minutes you could be swimming alongside a whale shark, if your luck is in.

Chill out in the world’s biggest flotation tank

The team at Float Utila claim that they have built the largest flotation tank in the world, which offers a relaxing break from the world outside. Floating in salty liquid with auditory and visual stimulation taken away might sound like a strange way to spend an hour, but it’s supposedly beneficial for both physical and mental health.

Kayaking in the mangroves of Utila, Honduras

Kayak to the cayes

If you want to get off the island, which can start to feel a little small after a few days, hire a kayak and head off to the explore the cayes to the south. Some are inhabited and others aren’t, and it makes for a good half-day trip.

See the wreckage of a drug-smuggling plane

On the east side of Utila there remains the wreckage of a drug-smuggling plane that came down in 2009. You can still see it today, in the middle of the jungle at the end of the airport runway.

Explore Cayo Cochinos Marine Park

Book a trip on a sail boat to look around these cayes, which are a few miles east of Utila. Fish for lunch, spot dolphins and hike to a scenic view point on the largest cay. It’s the best way to feel like the Caribbean pirates of old.

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
