Costa Rica has a reputation for being a biodiverse and environmentally conscious country. There are amazing conservation programs, truly green eco lodges, and a number of organic, and eco-friendly health and wellness product companies. The following companies are using all organic and locally-sourced ingredients to deliver high quality and effective sunscreens, mosquito repellents, rejuvenating lotions, exfoliating scrubs, nourishing balms, and happy belly treats.

Raw Botanicals

The company Raw Botanicals started in 1999 in the quiet town of Manuel Antonio. Originally just called Raw, product creator Molly McBride was inspired to make organic and eco-friendly products to match her and her husband’s organic and raw food lifestyle. The company also grew organically, first making handmade products for an organic day-spa called Uno, then opening their own laboratory and store in Quepos, and then making refillable dispensary bath products for eco lodges around Costa Rica. Their products and aromas are absolutely divine.

Jungle Mama

Jungle Mama creates high-quality, organic, and non-toxic sun protection and skin care products. Their highly effective sun protection products are reef-friendly, non-toxic, never tested on animals, and very water resistant. They also make delicious coffee scrubs, body creams, and lip balms. The creators, Lynda and Ingrid, originally created their sun protection balm because they couldn’t find anything in Costa Rica that was not only effective for protecting them against the harsh Costa Rican sun, but was also gentle on the skin and the environment.

Osalicious

Osalicious is an organic balm company that is highly committed to protecting the rainforest. They create lip balms, massage balms, beeswax candles, and even natural and biodegradable sticky surf wax. All of their ingredients are natural and locally sourced. Their factory and shop is located in downtown Puerto Jimenez, where you can shop and take a tour (by appointment). Osalicious donates a portion of their profits to rainforest conservation projects like Finca Siempre Verde.

Costa Rican Noni

Costa Rican Noni is an organic health supplement company which focuses mainly on producing and selling noni juice, virgin coconut oil, and aloe vera juice. All three of their natural products have been used for thousands of years in ancient cultures and have an impressive list of health benefits. Costa Rican Noni works with small indigenous tribes in Costa Rica to produce the highest quality organic virgin coconut oil and to help support the native local community.

Green Screen

One downside to living in or visiting the tropics is the mosquitoes. Some mosquitoes in Costa Rica carry dengue or chikungunya, which are both absolutely miserable viruses. Mosquitoes also can carry zika and malaria. It is important to always wear mosquito repellent, especially in the rainy season. Green Screen creates a totally natural, nontoxic, environmentally-friendly, and highly effective mosquito repellent that uses local herbs and other ingredients. Green Screen has been proven to be equally as effective as repellents that contain D.E.E.T.

Bella Bucha

Bella Bucha is an organic, small-batch kombucha company based out of Piedades, Santa Ana which distributes throughout Costa Rica. This ancient, fermented drink is full of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and probiotics, which are vital for energy, detoxification, and a balanced digestive system. They use high quality local ingredients to create a number of delicious flavor combinations.

Bioland

Bioland is Costa Rica’s biggest mainstream organic food, health, and beauty company. They have a rather impressive product line and can be found in most grocery stores and pharmacies throughout the country. Their beauty and wellness products are inspired by the scents and essence of Costa Rica, such as coconut, aloe, coffee, passionfruit, cocao, lemongrass, and citrus. Bioland is also dedicated to the environment and has its own Bioland Raising Trees Program.
