The egg waffle, one of Hong Kong’s most iconic and well-loved street snacks, is a quintessentially Hong Kong food to try. These fluffy, golden cakes can be found all over the city. Some vendors opt for a no-nonsense, classic egg waffle while others serve the snack with an innovative modern twist. We’ve rounded up the six best places to hit up for egg waffles in Hong Kong.

1. Master Low-Key Food Shop

Snack Bar, Chinese

This joint gets long queues and rave reviews for a reason, Master Low-Key’s crispy, heavenly egg waffles are richly flavored and so aromatic that you’ll smell them before you see them. It’s one of the few egg waffle vendors to have to use a ticket number system to manage the traffic.

Oddies Foodies

Oddies pairs traditional Hong Kong egg waffles with Italian gelato, which turns out to be a match made in heaven. Their signature bestseller is the Night Wolf, which contains a chocolate-chip flavored egg waffle in a cup containing 66% dark chocolate, banana ice cream and passion fruit panna cotta. Expect a long queue!

2. Lee Keung Kee North Point Egg Waffles

Pastry Shop, Chinese

What started as a single, humble egg waffle outlet in North Point has turned into a citywide empire with multiple outlets around town. Lee Keung Kee is known for egg waffles with a brittle, almost biscuit-like outer skin, contrasting with the moist, cake-like innards.

3. Mammy Pancake

Bakery, Dessert

Mammy’s chocolate-flavoured waffles are made by mixing dark chocolate chips into the batter before it’s poured into the mould, resulting in a much richer, bittersweet flavor than normal chocolate waffles, which are achieved simply by mixing in chocolate powder. They also offer other flavours such as green tea, sesame and sweet potato.

4. Tai-O Egg Waffle

Food Stand, Chinese

Locals call him the ‘Egg Puff Uncle’ of Tai O. He’s one of the remaining vendors to use a traditional charcoal stove – the way egg waffles were originally meant to be made – ensuring a crispy, smoky waffle full of old-school goodness.

5. Hung Kee Top Quality Egg Waffles

Restaurant, Chinese

The secret to Hung Kee’s melt-on-your-tongue egg waffles lies in an exclusive family recipe. The proprietor, Mr Lai, used to be an unlicensed vendor in Kowloon Tong, and after moving to his current hole-in-the-wall location in Sai Wan Ho, relies on word of mouth to keep the customers coming.
