If you’re attending Jerez’s wonderful Feria del Caballo and fancy a break from the partying, this is one of the best spots. Coso is a super-cool alternative hangout just down the road from the feria site and offers delicious breakfasts and meriendas (afternoon teas) made from organic produce. They’re best enjoyed on the comfy sofas, from where you can admire the original artwork that adorns the walls.

Bar Mónica

Bar, Cafe, Spanish

For a classic Spanish breakfast of strong coffee and a tostada topped with olive oil, tomatoes and salt, old-school Bar Mónica is hard to beat: not only is it on a beautiful square in the historical centre, its prices are ridiculously low. Even if you throw in a fresh orange juice, your brekkie won’t cost more than three euros. You’ll be joined by local police officers, who come in for their caffeine fix from the station opposite.

La Rosa de Oro

Cafe, Pastry Shop, Spanish, European

The Golden Rose has three outletes in Jerez, but the one you need to know about is set into a section of the old city wall on Calle Cosistorio, just around the corner from Plaza del Arenal. Many locals say it’s the best pastry and cake joint in town, especially because of its exquisite palmeras de chocolates – heart-shaped puff pastries coated in chocolate. These can be enjoyed on a small terrace that’s ideal for people-watching.

Churreria-Bar El Andén

Bar, Cafe, Spanish

Served with a thick chocolate sauce for dipping, churros are a staple of breakfasts and meriendas in Spain. One of the best places in Jerez to enjoy these deep-fried, doughy sacks in is Churreria El Andén, a characterful bar/café located opposite the train station. Andén also does a great cup of coffee, a delicious porra (fritter) and boasts a spacious outside seating area from which to watch the world go by.

Alfredo Café Copas

Bar, Cafe, Spanish, European

Located out of the city centre, near the lovely González Hontoria park, Alfredo Café Copas is another great hangout if you’re attending the May Horse Fair. It opens at four in the afternoon and by 5pm is usually busy with locals, who come here because of the variety of options for merienda. There are plenty of teas, coffees and pastries, but why not treat yourself to an amazing icecream or a sexy cocktail?

Rincón Granaino

Bar, Cafe, Spanish

If you’re exploring the flamenco neighbourhood of Santiago (home to the excellent Andalusian Flamenco Centre), make time for a pit-stop at Rincón Granaino. A traditional bar that’s popular with the locals, it does a tasty, good-value Spanish breakfast of coffee and tostadas that’s usually available until about midday; and if you’re visiting in the afternoon, refresh yourself with a cold caña (beer) on the sunny terrace.
