Where You Can Play Sports in Lagos

Lagosians are ardent sports fans: not only are they savvy about the goings-on in the world of sports (particularly football), they also participate in different kinds of sports, and many of Nigeria’s athletes and sports heroes started out in Lagos. The following are some of the places to play various sports in Lagos.

Onikan Stadium

Home stadium to several football teams, notably Julius Berger Football Club, First Bank, and Stationery Stores F.C. This is the oldest stadium in Nigeria and is located on Lagos Island near Tafawa Balewa Square. Although originally built in 1930, the stadium and its facilities are the most functional on the Island.

Lagos Country Club

Sports Center, Swimming Pool

A membership-only club located at Surulere, Lagos Country Club was founded in 1949 and has since expanded into one of the best-maintained sporting facilities in Lagos. With both indoor and outdoor sections, the club has squash and badminton courts, table tennis, billiards, and a fully-equipped gymnasium that has a Taekwondo program. The club also has an Olympic-size swimming pool.

Teslim Balogun Stadium

A multi-purpose stadium with an Olympic-size swimming pool, Teslim Balogun Stadium at Surulere has a standard football arena, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, and a gymnasium. Although primarily built for football matches, the stadium’s tracks are used for athletic events and it is opened early for joggers.

Ikeja Golf Club

A small, but scenic club in a secluded section of Ikeja, the club has a nine-hole golf course in a parkland style and loan golf gear for reasonable prices. There are also coaches available to teach novices the basics.

Agege Stadium

Bridge, Stadium

A multi-purpose stadium and the home ground of MFM Football Club, Pepsi Football Academy, and the Bridge Boys Football Club. It has a world standard basketball court, lawn-tennis court, race courses, and a gymnasium. The stadium has an artificial-turn pitch and can sit about 4,000 people.

Leisure Sports Park

Gym, Park, Sports Center

A recreational centre/sports park located in Lekki with state-of-the-art sports equipment and standard courts for volleyball, quads, football, basketball, lawn tennis, and table tennis. They also have a fitness gym and jogging tracks. Professionals also offer aerobic classes and fitness workouts for their clients.

Founded in 1895, the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club has some of the best lawn-tennis facilities on the Island. Several national and international lawn-tennis stars have played here. In 2016, Venus and Serena Williams held an exhibition match at the club. In addition to the tennis court, the Club also has a fully-equipped gym.

GET Arena Lekki

GET Arena is more of a sports lounge and an arcade than an outdoor-sports arena, but they have the best go-kart track surrounding the complex.
