How to Trek Morocco's Atlas Valley

Discover the best way to trek Morocco’s Atlas Valley without missing any must-see locations such as the Valley of Roses, Jbel Skoura, Alemdoun Village and the Dades Gorges.

Day 1

Arriving in Marrakech through Menara Airport, you will meet your driver who will take you to your hotel, where you can have dinner and relax, anticipating the busy day ahead of you.

Day 2

You’ll have to wake up early to enjoy a nice breakfast with everyone and get ready for a long day that will end in Tighermatine. After breakfast, you will drive towards Ait Khiar, the starting point of the trek. The hike will last three hours, where you will meet a couple of muleteers who will help you with the adventure. First, you will cross the High Atlas mountains through the Tizi N’Tichka route, which can be a little dangerous, then pass Ouarzazate, the Skoura palm grove and finally the Valley of Roses. You’ll be able to hike along the rivers to discover the astounding Berber villages, kasbahs and gardens in the surrounding areas, before you finally set up your tents and rest at the camp.

Day 3

After a good night’s sleep, be prepared for a five-hour walk towards Agouti Al Foukani. Starting with a nice walk along the river, through fields of corn, roses and almond trees, you will witness some of the most stunning views in the area, of Saghro, an area filled with palm trees and mountains, the Valley of Roses and Ighil Mgoun. Finally, it will be time to set camp in Agouti Al Foukani until the next morning.

Day 4

Get ready for a four-hour walk today, towards Amejgag. Starting the route up north, you’ll stop at Alemdoun village for a traditional Berber lunch and to meet people from the village. In the afternoon, you will continue the trek through the cultivated fields to reach Amejgag, where you will set up camp. Once on the premises, you can explore the nearby natural lakes and valleys.

Day 5

Moving east from Amejgag, you can admire the beautiful view of the valley ahead, and then follow a route that will lead you to a small village filled with cob houses and natural lakes. After a good lunch, you will continue to Boutaghrar, where you will spend the night in the homes of the people of the village. The total amount of time walking will be around five to six hours.

Day 6

This is the last day of the trek, where you will be able to discover the Dades Gorges, the Valley of Roses and Ait Atta, one of the most traditional Berber villages in the south of Morocco. Arriving at Ait Youl, you will enjoy an exquisite lunch, and then meet your driver, who will take you to the Dades Gorges where you’ll be spending the night at a hotel.

Day 7

After a breakfast with a stunning view of the gorges, you’ll start your journey back to Marrakech by the Tichka route, with many beautiful sightings along the way.
