The 10 Best Brunches In Copacabana, Rio De Janeiro

Benjamin M. Smith

Any experienced night owl knows the importance of an excellent brunch after a night on the town. When in such a lively neighborhood as Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, any skilled tourist should have the location of their breakfast or brunch planned in advance before partying, carnival style. We’ve put together a list of the best brunch establishments in town.

1. The Bakers

Bakery, Dessert

The Bakers offers a wide variety of everything sweet and savory necessary to make a great traveler’s brunch. Come to this bakery to sit down or to grab a bite to takeaway (it is, after all, just a couple blocks away from a very inviting slice of Copacabana Beach). Whether it’s the Brazilian classic, pão de queijo, with coffee, or a more formal brunch, featuring savory egg dishes and fresh fruit, or even a Nutella-Kit Kat cake, The Bakers delivers on all fronts and is a real neighborhood favorite.

2. Cofeitaria Colombo

Bakery, Cafe, Brazilian, Contemporary

Located at Copacabana Fort, Confeitaria Colombo and its beach-side outdoor terrace, Café do Forte, offer the best combination of history, food, and beauty under one roof. The belle-époque architecture of this confeitaria captures the elegant style of a bygone time, whose high, tiled ceiling truly tries your imagination. Amidst the smells of the upstairs buffet and the sweet French-style pastries at the coffee bar, come to Confeitaria Colombo to sightsee while touring Copacabana Beach, the Copacabana Fort, or to enjoy an excellent brunch either in or out of doors.

3. Boulangerie Guerin

Come to Boulangerie Guerin for some of the best coffee and French breads in Copacabana. Visit this quaint cafe for a café-au-lait and a croissant before hitting the beach, or dine in and watch the bakers create little culinary masterpieces behind the large glass window. Located on the Copacabana Promenade, Boulangerie Guerin is an easy stop on a stroll, with some of the best scenic vistas in the area.

4. Apetite Café

Cafe, Coffee Shop, Coffee

Don’t miss the Apetite Café on Rua Souza Lima for a nice breakfast enjoyed out of doors. From their freshly baked goods to their sandwiches and omelets, this cafe is one of the hidden gems of Copacabana – in part because of its lack of a sign near the front entrance, and also for its great reputation in the neighborhood. Attracting visitors from abroad as well as elsewhere throughout the city, Apetite Café is known for excellent coffee, fare, and friendly service in an area once overrun with tourist traps.

5. The View, Windsor Atlântica Hotel

Restaurant, Brazilian, South American

When staying at the superb Windsor Atlântica Hotel in Copacabana, be sure to take in the beach-side views of the Rio coastline from the breakfast table. Aptly named The View, the hotel brunch spot has one of the most exquisite views of the city, and a fantastic brunch at a very reasonable price. Located on a quiet patch of the Copacabana beach, staying at the Windsor definitely has its perks during high season in Brazil – not to mention the heated pool on the 39th floor and the champagne breakfasts.

6. Confeitaria By Lopes

Bakery, Restaurant, Dessert

Despite its modern appearance, Confeitaria By Lopes stays true to the simple Brazilian breakfast staples like pão de queijo and pão na chapa, but also operates as a bakery and confectionery shop and offers a wide variety of expertly made breads, cakes, and bonbons. With sparse white chairs and white furniture, Confeitaria By Lopes unassumingly produces some of the best breads and pastries in Copacabana. Perfect for a group with many tastes, be sure to come to this Copacabana restaurant for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet mid-day snack.

7. La Fiducia Café

Cafe, Coffee Shop, Coffee

Located close to the birthplace of bossa nova, the Beco das Garrafas, La Fiducia Café offers a calm, café atmosphere to decompress after a night out in Rio, or the perfect place to begin an exploration of the beautiful music of Brazil. With its brick interior, fanciful wooden chairs and tables, this café offers a rare ambiance in bustling Copacabana. Try the omelet with chicken breast or one of the many crêpes, or stick to the basics like a regular Brazilian and order pão, café, and an orange juice.

8. Café 18 do Forte

If the fancier Confeitaria Colombo isn’t quite your scene, try Café 18 do Forte, the Copacabana Fort’s other more informal cafe. With some of the same great views of the entire Copacabana coastline, enjoy a relaxed atmosphere outside the fort before continuing your travels to Ipanema. Here, waffles, omelets, and other traditional Brazilian dishes rule, and with a waiting staff well versed in international hospitality, enjoying a meal here comes easily.

9. Cafeína

Cafe, Coffee

Cafeína is a European-style cafe with locations throughout Rio de Janeiro but has its main store in Copacabana. From its tiled floors and yellow walls, this cafe is a really enjoyable spot to knock back an espresso and devour a local bread. Cafeína has a great selection of pastries, cakes, and tarts to be enjoyed at any time of the day, but look for their simple breakfast, consisting of baguette, butter, jam, turkey and cheese, and a hot and cold drink to load up before a day in the sun.

10. Pérgula

Pérgula

Eating brunch, sitting poolside at Copacabana’s most legendary hotel, the Belmond Copacabana Palace, could easily be the pinnacle of morning dining in “The Marvelous City”. Pérgula, the hotel’s first-class brunch location, is indeed second-to-none. Although on the pricey side, Pérgula’s chefs trust the simplicity of fresh ingredients, with a breakfast buffet comprising of ripe Brazilian fruit, bread, cheese, and some of the best juice in the city. Be sure to stop here on Saturdays for some of the best feijoada going.
