A city where hikes are in abundance, cycle paths run parallel to the coastline and a beach-centric lifestyle prevails, it’s not hard to see why sports and exercise have buried themselves into the daily routine of many Carioca (a person born in Rio). There are a number of gyms in Copacabana for those looking to keep up the fitness regime while abroad. Here are some of the best in the neighborhood.

Built around the concept of lifestyle and wellness, Bodytech has shaped itself into one of the most comprehensive and modern fitness centers in Brazil. Their website gathers news from the fitness world and includes articles about lifestyle and nutrition. In addition to a fully-equipped gym, members of Bodytech also have access to a wide range of activities and classes such as jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, dance, swimming, yoga, Pilates and circuit training.

Open-air Gyms

The great outdoors is one of the best places to exercise and a lot of Cariocas favor exercising by the beach. All along the Copacabana beach are small workout stations where you can exercise using body weight rather than physical weights. With equipment such as a pull-up bar and sit up bench, the stations are ideal for stretching before running along the beachside cycle path or to do more muscle-specific exercises. Walk to the far end of Copacabana to get to Arpoador where the beach – known as Praia dos Diabos – has free weights to exercise with.

Smart Fit

Known as The Intelligent Gym, Smart Fit is one of the cheapest gyms in Brazil and fully-equipped with modern workout stations and well-qualified professional fitness instructors. There are more than 260 units throughout Brazil, Copacabana having four Smart Fit gyms to choose from. Every member can have an exercise plan designed for them to add structure to each workout and target specific muscle groups.

Gold’s G.Y.M

Cheap and cheerful is the name of the game at Gold’s G.Y.M. The equipment may be a bit worn around the edges, yet it does the job and allows gym-goers to have a comprehensive and complete workout. The running machines are in great condition and the professionals who work there are keen to help when it comes to devising a workout plan. Unlike most gyms that only accept monthly payment, Gold’s offers a daily rate making it perfect for those passing through Rio for just a few days.

Formula is the budget option of the expensive and exclusive Bodytech, with both gyms run by the same management group. Despite being a budget choice, Formula is still a modern gym with extensive equipment options, personal trainers and fitness professionals. Upon registering, a fitness trainer will create a customized plan to suit your needs and help fulfill your objectives. In addition to the gym, there are also classes of spinning, yoga, Muay Thai, trampoline and circuit training.
