Save your dollars for exploring the North Island by booking one of these affordable hostels in New Zealand’s largest city.

Auckland is one of the main places backpackers and budget-conscious travellers land when they arrive in New Zealand. If you need to keep your accommodation expenses at a minimum, this city has got you covered. From downtown gems to conveniently located suburban getaways, here are some of the best hostels you can check into.

1. Attic Backpackers

“Your dreams start here,” reads one inscription on the wall of this top-floor hostel on Wellesley Street. Geared to suit every roaming backpacker, Attic has its very own travel desk advertising a range of activities and is centrally located, only a few steps from Auckland’s Sky Tower. Inside, the generously- spaced communal areas also include a bright, leafy roof terrace. There’s even a few guitars up for grabs for those keen to introduce themselves with a musical number.

2. Haka Lodge Ponsonby

Located in the up-market suburb of Ponsonby, Haka Lodge sits between the stylish eateries and boutique shops that give the area its trendy reputation. The lodge fits well into its surroundings and is easily recognised by its pastel shades, bay windows and Rapunzel-like spire. Even the dorm rooms are chic, featuring solid wood bunk beds with built-in storage lockers, night lamps and privacy curtains.

4. Hobson Lodge

With a quiet curfew in place between 9pm and 9am and a strict ban on alcohol, travellers seeking a restful night’s sleep will feel at home here in central Auckland. Best of all, a relaxing respite doesn’t mean you’ll lose out on any fun; the teeming bars of Queen Street are still only a 10-minute walk away. On-site parking is offered at an additional cost, but wifi and the use of computers is free throughout.

5. Borders Beyond Backpacker

The two reclining sofas that greet visitors on the porch set the scene for these quirky digs, south of Auckland’s Central Business District. Free perks include parking, local telephone calls and unlimited tea and coffee, while a six-minute hot shower will set you back a few cents. The Auckland-savvy staff, including a former nightclub manager, are happy to give you tips on top night spots and even working holiday visas.

6. Haka Lodge Auckland

A solid oak dining bench, exposed-brick walls and an open-plan kitchen and lounge area mean this hotel wouldn’t look out of place alongside its Haka Lodge sibling in Ponsonby. Dorm rooms range from five-bed to 20-bed rooms, with female-only options available. The hostel is part of the Haka Tour group, which means that residents who dare to sign up for the 192m (630ft) Sky Jump can do so at a discounted rate.

7. Verandahs Parkside Lodge

Family-run by three Kiwi brothers and built from native Kauri timber, Verandahs in Western Park offer a local’s perspective on the city. It is handily-placed between fashionable Ponsonby and the student hangout on Karangahape Road – known locally as K’ Road. Featuring ornate fireplaces and leather sofas, the space feels less like a hostel and more like someone’s home. This theme is continued into the dorms, where comfy single beds are favoured over the standard bunk-bed offerings.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
