Papanui is a quiet suburb of Christchurch that has recently seen a flourishing of independent food joints and artisanal cafes. Here are our favorite places to spend a relaxed morning over coffee and a good brunch spread.

Eggs Benedict With Bacon

Station One Cafe

Located at the busy intersection of Papanui Road and Harewood Road, Station One is one of the neighborhood’s most popular brunch spots. A previous Christchurch winner of the New Zealand Cafe of the Year awards, Station One serves an all day breakfast menu comprising old favorites like eggs Benedict and French toast. For something more substantial, sample their speciality blue cod fish and chips, or a steak sandwich.

Brigittes

Brigittes Restaurant and Bar has been around for more than 35 years, serving simple but elegant food and lovingly brewed coffee to a loyal clientele. The Big Breakfast is a must-try: a solid example of the indulgent fry-up, featuring streaky bacon, poached eggs, and perfectly done hash browns. Pair this with a classic Kiwi flat white, for the complete experience. Breakfast is served until 3pm.

Mushrooms

Il Magro Espresso Bar

Hidden behind a gas station on Winston Avenue, Il Magro is tiny and not your typical brunch venue. The espresso bar is standing-only, but does fantastic pastries and sandwiches. Of course, the coffee (made from their very own blend of beans) is also excellent. Be sure to look out for the freshly baked baguettes, served with a selection of locally produced jams and spreads.

Jimmy’s Restaurant and Bar

Jimmy’s Restaurant and Bar, part of the four-star Pavilions Hotel, is the place to go for a casual, al fresco brunch. Breakfast and brunch-specific items are served between 6.30 and 10am, but if you are in the mood for a heavier meal, try a homemade pie or toastie from their all-day snack menu.

Flat White

Strawberry Fare

Strawberry Fare wins major points for its focus on fresh, quality ingredients. Breakfast items, on offer throughout the week include blueberry pancakes (with bacon), hot smoked salmon with poached eggs, and grilled field mushrooms. On weekends, the brunch menu also involves a delicately flavored pea risotto, as well as tender duck confit. Be sure to save room for some of the famed desserts.

No. 4 Bar and Restaurant

This gastropub stands out for its massive brunch and breakfast plates. The pork belly confit served with bubble and squeak, fennel, and apple is one of the menu’s stars, as is the breakfast steak with eggs. The menu describes seasonal produce as “trending local vegetables”, which gives a strong hint as to the young, hipster crowd that make up most of the clientele.
