Perth is one of the most isolated cities in the world, but one of Australia’s closest neighbouring countries is China, which means you’ll find tasty Chinese food all over the city. From dim sum to dumplings, Perth has you covered for the best restaurants serving up authentic and diverse Chinese cuisine.

Mr Bun

A surprisingly cheap takeaway option on a grungy corner of Murray Street, Mr Bun specialises in street-style Chinese eats. Despite being a small shop, Mr Bun is famous for its hand-made noodles and Chinese burgers that are filled with pork, lamb or beef. The menu is simple and favours wheat-based dishes such as the Chinese pork burger, which is served in a crispy flatbread. Teeming with city workers, the eatery can get busy at lunchtime.

Hong Kong BBQ House

Hong Kong BBQ House in Northbridge looks like your normal corner restaurant, with its muted decor and dim lighting. But don’t be fooled, the food packs a serious punch, and the menu even attracts many of Perth’s Chinese residents. Try the Hong Shao Rou (sweet soy pork belly) or BBQ pork if you want to be impressed.

Dragon Palace

An unmissable line snakes out the front of Dragon Palace, which promises – and delivers – one of Perth’s best dim sum experiences. With a grandiose neon sign and circular building, it offers a wide range of Chinese dishes, including their large dumplings that come either steamed or fried and the classic pork and chive. In addition, this Perth institution offers private karaoke rooms with its own menu delivered straight to you and your microphone.

Miss Chow’s

Sister restaurant to Rice Baby, Miss Chow’s has recently expanded to three locations due to its popular offerings. A modern take on Chinese food, the restaurant appeals to a younger crowd with their selection of dishes – including the ginger and shallot beef – cocktails, and hip and laid-back interior. The restaurant offers a full menu as well as an array of dumplings. Try the BBQ pork buns – they taste as good as they look.

Good Fortune Duck House

Conveniently located close to the vibrant William Street, Good Fortune Duck House is a perfect choice for a cheap bite while bar-hopping with friends. If you have time to languish, order the whole roast duck, which is roasted to order. But if you’re in a hurry, go for the crisp and flavourful Peking Duck San Choy Bow. This Cantonese-style restaurant is typical in that you’ll find hanging ducks displayed by the window, but when the menu includes a house-made chilli oil, you’ll know it’s not your average restaurant.

Andly Private Kitchen

Discreetly located under an apartment block in the popular suburb of West Leederville, Andly Private Kitchen is a high-end pick for when you feel like spoiling yourself. The dark atmosphere is perfectly set by overhead hanging lanterns. With no set menu, chef and owner Yuekuan Li designs and serves a degustation menu based on your preferences and his ingredients. Expect to be wowed.

Uncle Billy’s Chinese Restaurant

The weekend crowd packs out this popular late-night venue. After bar-hopping on William Street, a young crowd fills the large round tables at Uncle Billy’s Chinese Restaurant, creating a lively atmosphere. It’s no wonder it’s a late-night pick for many locals, as this family-owned restaurant operates until 4am most nights. Expect to wait for a table on Saturday or Sunday nights, but to satisfy a dim sum craving, it’s well worth the wait.

BamBamBoo

Take a seat around one of the communal tables and admire the street art-inspired wall and contemporary interior with vibrant colours at BamBamBoo in Perth’s Central Business District. The cuisine is authentic, and spicy if you choose. Order the mouth-watering bao with fish, or the unbeatable chilli pepper tofu, and enjoy the upbeat vibe.

Kung Fu Kitchen

Can you handle the heat? Well, be sure to head to Northbridge’s Kung Fu Kitchen for their Sichuan cuisine. The menu ranges from Chinese noodle soups to meat dishes, but the main attraction is perhaps their Sichuan hot pots. Try the secret recipe mini hot pot whose range goes up to “Devil Spicy”. The no-frills decor is similar to what you would expect in a food court, but don’t be fooled, this place is not for the faint-hearted.
