With Australia being at the forefront of health and wellbeing, you can literally have your cake and eat it; no matter what your dietary requirement may be. Giving up dessert favourites because of an intolerance or health issue can be tough, but that does not have to be the case in Melbourne. These are the best desserts that are exclusively gluten-free.

Vegie Bar chocolate cake

Vegie Bar, Fitzroy — Chocolate Royale

Located in Fitzroy, Vegie Bar is one of the top vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne and offers the best gluten-free chocolate fudge cake; warm, melted chocolate dripping down a soft sponge served with creamy, cold ice cream (vegan ice cream available, if that’s your preference). Vegie Bar also doubles up as one of Fitzroy’s finest vegetarian restaurants with its Asian-based cuisine popular with all.

A cosy cafe located in Ivanhoe, Caffe Strada is an absolute must-see for any gluten-free groupie. Paul and his wife Bernie take a real pride in providing the locals with delicious and healthy gluten-free options, without sacrificing on taste or variety. Although every dessert here is gluten free, the chocolate éclair (sliced in half and filled with delicious whipped cream) is an absolute must-try. Topped with a dark, rich fondant and a surprisingly light pastry, you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between this and the traditionally baked version.

No matter what day you visit, Cupcake Central will have a range of gluten-free options. The menu changes daily so there is always something new to try and a solid excuse to go back for seconds! If you’re lucky, you might get the chance to listen to the talented David Knight playing his guitar in the food court hall whilst you indulge in delicious cupcake heaven.

Gluten-free crepes were once hard to come by, until now! In the hip suburb of Fitzroy, the French crepe restaurant Rue De Creperie has been making a splash with their varied menu, which now also caters to vegans. Of course, the menu caters for a savoury dish too, but the real joy here is in the sweet taste of fruits, chocolate, cream and honey goodness. It is a must-try in Fitzroy.
