Ensconced amid dense forest, midway between Stowe and the mountain resort, Topnotch is home to an excellent spa with various pools, including a 60ft (18m) indoor pool, and a tennis academy. The main restaurant serves regional dishes to tables that offer mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows. In winter, you can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest.

As the name suggests, there’s a strong German influence to this fine old hotel, with its wooden balconies, and rustic wood and brick design.
