The main town of Stowe is 7mi (11km) southeast of the Stowe Mountain Resort. Here, you’ll find some of the best accommodations in the area, such as Field Guide Lodge. If you opt for the rather confidently named Topnotch Resort, know that the property’s name is not ironic. Ensconced amid dense forest, midway between Stowe and the mountain resort, Topnotch is home to an excellent spa with various pools, including a 60ft (18m) indoor pool, and a tennis academy. The main restaurant serves regional dishes to tables that offer mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows. In winter, you can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest.

Visitors to Stowe Mountain have been staying at the Stowehof since 1950. As the name suggests, there’s a strong German influence to this fine old hotel, with its wooden balconies, and rustic wood and brick design. The Fritz Restaurant explores Vermont’s Bavarian heritage through its dishes – such as pork schnitzel – and beers. The hotel rooms have a plush chalet vibe, with four-poster beds and gentle, warm lighting.
