There’s no denying that winter is one of the most wonderful times of the year. Sometimes the chill outside seeps in, and there is a need to warm up inside. There is no sweeter way to warm up your days this winter than to enjoy a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Houston has become quite the culinary city, and hot chocolates are no exception. Here are some of the best options around the city for a delectable cup of hot chocolate.

Hot Chocolate

Chocolat du Monde

It is no surprise that the best hot cocoa is almost always found at chocolatier boutiques, and this European-style store hidden in the Rice Village area is no exception. They offer a selection of delicate chocolate truffles and boxes for gifts. High quality cacao makes their hot cocoa a mouthwatering treat. The store closes by 6pm each night, so get there early! This is a perfect spot for a pre-dinner treat.

Cacao & Cardamom

This cute, modern shop is definitely a must-try this year. For a little more than a year, Annie Rupani has been perfecting her chocolate art in this contemporary chic shop. At her store, she offers handcrafted chocolates, ice cream, delicious hot or frozen hot chocolate and even a great selection of wine, which pairs beautifully with these exotic sweets. Cacao & Cardamom almost made it to first position because they have many options for different hot chocolates, and the taste of the hazelnut chocolate is very distinctive. You can choose from sipping, drinking, Mochaccino or frozen, choose your base between whole milk, macadamia milk or water, and choose your chocolate between 85 percent Colombian, 72 percent Venezuelan, 64 percent Madagascan or Gianduja (Hazelnut).

Agora

The perfect place to sit and chill with friends, Agora has become quite the meeting spot over the years. You will find students finishing assignments, friends chatting over a cup of coffee or some sangria and even families enjoying some time together in this hip Houston cafe. Topped with thick, sweet whipped cream and with spices available at the spice table, their hot cocoa is one of the best in town.

Hugo’s is well known among Houstonians for offering the best Mexican-style chocolate caliente in town. This winter treat is a spicy twist on the rich flavor or traditional hot chocolate. The owner’s other restaurants, Backstreet Cafe and Caracol, carry it as well. They roast and grind their cacao beans in-house and accompany the chocolate caliente with crispy delicious churros for dipping.

Araya Artisan Chocolate

We are down to THE single best hot chocolate Houston has to offer. Araya Artisan Chocolate is the place for locally crafted decadent chocolate made from Venezuelan cacao. The hot cocoa is to die for. Richly thick and exotic melted chocolate is added to a cup of warm milk and served alongside spices and marshmallows for your convenience. Araya used to serve it the old-fashioned way with sticks of chocolate that you could dip into the cup, but now it’s pre-melted for faster service. The dipping chocolate sticks can be purchased to go during the winter season to make at home, so buy some to surprise your guests with some of the best chocolate they will ever taste.
