History lovers, beer buffs and families will love Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, for its idyllic hikes, breweries and famous battlefield sites, where the Civil War raged in 1863. There’s plenty for those with pets in tow, too, with dog-friendly trails, restaurants and wineries, even ghost tours. 1. Wyndham Gettysburg

This hotel, just outside downtown Gettysburg, has thought of everything. Guests at the hotel can enjoy a heated indoor pool, state-of-the-art fitness centre, games room and an on-site movie theatre screening the latest releases. When it’s time to explore further afield, a free shuttle service will whisk you downtown. Dogs under 50lb (22kg) are welcome for $30 (£22) a day.

2. Inn at Cemetery Hill

It won’t break the bank to bring your pet to Gettysburg at this family-owned inn situated between Steinwehr Avenue and Baltimore Street. Pets can stay for just $20 (£14) a night in rooms which have wood-look flooring to guarantee hygiene. Ask for one on the first floor with a balcony and its own entrance so you can head out for walks without disturbing anyone.

3. Courtyard Marriott Gettysburg

It’s easy to explore the Gettysburg sights from this contemporary hotel at the crossroads of US 15 and US 30 in the Gateway Gettysburg Campus. Visit the National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site, then enjoy the indoor pool, whirlpool and all-day restaurant serving Starbucks coffee. A maximum of two dogs per room are welcome for a nightly charge of $50 (£35).

This newly-built Best Western hotel is within walking distance of the Gettysburg National Military Park and Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Many rooms overlook the battlefield and Pickett’s Charge and there’s a fitness centre, indoor swimming pool, shop and laundry facilities. There’s no need to leave your pet at home while you get your history fix either: dogs up to 50lbs (23kg) are welcome for $30 (£21) a night and water bowls can be provided.

6. Super 8 by Wyndham Gettysburg

This budget hotel, off Routes 30 and 15, has all you need for a great stay in Gettysburg with your pet in tow. Two animals of up to 50lbs (23kg) can join you for just $12 (£8.50) a night and there are grassy areas on the property. Rooms have fridges and microwaves so you can cook basic meals without needing to find pet-friendly dining and all guests are entitled to a free, eight-item breakfast each morning.
