Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, Spring House, in Barryville, New York, was built in 1880 and was until recently in near continuous use as a hotel. Brushing the Pennsylvania border on the banks of the Delaware River, the hamlet of Barryville is only a two-hour drive from New York City, and in the middle of picturesque countryside. 1. The Erie Hotel & Restaurant, Port Jervis

A classic hotel in a classic building – built in 1890 as a railroad hotel – the Erie retains a lot of that frontier, new world charm. With traditional and cozy rooms that all offer wifi, flat-screen TVs and ensuite bathrooms, this hotel makes for a great stay. There’s free parking, a pool table and a tiki bar – which is a local favorite. A cheeky pun? An accidental name? I guess we’ll never know. Oh, hold on – yes, we do – the cottage around the back is called Stickett Inn (the Rear). Lovely. An urban enclave in the woods, the cool rooms are trendy and considered – with memory foam beds, free wifi, rainfall showers and cable TV. There’s also access to a communal outdoor hot tub and a bar, home to the inn’s signature cider and a taqueria.
