Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, Spring House, in Barryville, New York, was built in 1880 and was until recently in near continuous use as a hotel. Brushing the Pennsylvania border on the banks of the Delaware River, the hamlet of Barryville is only a two-hour drive from New York City, and in the middle of picturesque countryside. Rest up in these awesome nearby hotels – bookable on Culture Trip.
A classic hotel in a classic building – built in 1890 as a railroad hotel – the Erie retains a lot of that frontier, new world charm. With traditional and cozy rooms that all offer wifi, flat-screen TVs and ensuite bathrooms, this hotel makes for a great stay. There’s free parking, a pool table and a tiki bar – which is a local favorite. For meals, try the on-site all-American restaurant, serving comfort food including fresh burgers, as well as craft beer.
This sprawling building is in a great location for the tri-state area of New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and offers free hot breakfast and free parking for whichever state is in your sights. The generous rooms are relaxed and comfortable, decorated in warm hues and complete with modern bathrooms. There’s an attractive stone fireplace in the lobby where you can sip your complimentary coffee, and for a dip, there’s a saltwater pool.
This modern hotel has a touch of class. The fireplace of its wood-paneled lobby ensures a warm welcome, while the rooms guarantee satisfaction – generous and comfortable with understated colors, expansive windows and tasteful trimmings. There’s an informal restaurant serving American cuisine, and if you’re still hungry, there’s a snack shop, too. Hot breakfast and covered parking are complimentary – and to work off the snack shop, there’s a well-equipped fitness center.
You’ll feel as if you’re on a Scottish family estate rather than in the middle of the Pennsylvania countryside at this expansive resort. Set on 5,500 acres (2,225ha) of parkland, this country pile has just the sort of accommodation you’d hope for – classic, opulent, considered and decked in rich colors. Speaking of rich, there’s a wealth of activities at your fingertips, including a treetop adventure course, ax throwing and rock climbing.
A cheeky pun? An accidental name? I guess we’ll never know. Oh, hold on – yes, we do – the cottage around the back is called Stickett Inn (the Rear). Lovely. An urban enclave in the woods, the cool rooms are trendy and considered – with memory foam beds, free wifi, rainfall showers and cable TV. There’s also access to a communal outdoor hot tub and a bar, home to the inn’s signature cider and a taqueria.
An arts-and-crafts-era inn dating to 1927, this has been a family affair for over 40 years, and the love shows. Though adorned with antiques and period-appropriate furnishings, this is not a museum – it’s a place to relax and indulge. Priding themselves on their seasonal farm-to-table restaurant, Settlers Inn makes for luxury lodgings that are cozy, comfortable and traditional without being stuffy. There’s also a complimentary country breakfast to devour.
A three-story, clapboard hotel from the 1800s, Fauchère effortlessly blends historic authenticity with contemporary technology and comfort. You’ll be immersed in elegant surroundings from the moment you step through the door: from a sunlit reception to stylish and indulgent rooms, which feature luxury linens, Apple TV, Nespresso machines and marble bathrooms with heated floors. The equally elegant dining space serves high-end comfort food and there’s a complimentary continental breakfast.
Just an eight-minute drive from the quaint town of Hawley, this family-run resort has recently reopened after extensive renovations. The property, composed of 13 historic structures dating back to the 1920s, offers several types of lodging on Lake Wallenpaupack. Five different types of guest room are available, plus a bunkhouse, several cottages and three houses. Water is literally front and center, with activities including paddleboating, rowing and canoeing.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
