If you haven’t already encountered this colorful culinary trend, “unicorn food” refers to anything rainbow-hued, sparkly, and, as often as not, horned. Serving up snacks that are as sweet to look at as they are to eat, here are 10 of New York City’s most magical unicorn desserts.
Marrying the texture of traditional Korean pastries and contemporary creative flavors, “modern rice cake brand” Besfren offers something entirely unique. This spot’s Rainbow Roll treat features yuja-vanilla cream rolled with multi-colored chiffon cake and topped with white and dark chocolate pearls. Also offering green tea macarons, rose bonbons, orange-chocolate cake, and more, Besfren invites you to taste the rainbow.
A woman-owned bar specializing in drink and dessert pairings, Butter and Scotch is something of a unicorn itself. The Unicorn Treat, a salty butter cookie bedazzled in multicolor and gold glitter “blingkles,” is one of many rainbow-hued treats at Butter and Scotch. The colorful three-layer birthday cake (hailed by New York Magazine as “the absolute best birthday cake in NYC”) along with the harlequin Friend of Dorothy cocktail are as sweet to look at as they are to eat.
A favorite player in New York’s bustling pop-up scene, Dulcinea delivers traditional Spanish treats with a twist. Crowds of tourists and locals alike line up outside this festival hot spot for a taste of Dulcinea’s Unicorn Ice Cream Sandwich: a rainbow-swirled scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with sprinkles and dulce de leche and sandwiched between two round churros. Trust your fellow foodies and do it for the ‘gram—and your taste buds.
With its $20 price tag, Gelso and Grand’s Unicornolli is as lofty and intriguing as its namesake creature—and every bit as magical too. Two unicorn-inspired fillings, lavender-berry and funfetti cake, along with toppings, including mini macarons, rainbow sprinkles, and a bite-sized slice of funfetti cake, make this super-sized dessert well worth every cent.
Already available in every color of the rainbow, macarons just became even more magical thanks to the arrival of Macaron Parlour’s Unicorn Macaron. Dessert lovers may be eager to dig into the treat’s creamy dulce de leche center, but not before snapping a shot of its delicate chocolate crust, designed to resemble a sleeping unicorn.
While bagels might be relegated only to breakfast in other parts of the world, in New York City, they’re appropriate—and encouraged—morning, noon, and night. Chances are you’ve seen the famous rainbow bagels, courtesy of Williamsburg’s The Bagel Store, that all of New York (and Instagram) have been gobbling up. Serving up a wide variety of multi-hued bagels, including the original Rainbow Bagel, along with funfetti, rainbow, and more kaleidoscope-colored cream cheeses, The Bagel Store is banishing boring breakfasts one bite at a time.
Recently opened New Territories delivers a taste of traditional Hong Kong sweets to New York City. The spot’s popular Unicorn Parade milkshake includes Ube, two-toned pocky sticks, Fruity Pebbles™ dust, and more. The menu at New Territories, which also features pink whipped cream roses, yellow banana chips, and chocolaty Nutella® drizzle, is sure to pass your taste test with flying colors.
Condensed milk, butter, and flavorings are combined and covered with a crunchy topping to form a brigadeiro, a bite-sized yet decadent dessert popular in its native Brazil. New York’s own Brigadeiro Bakery puts a creative spin on this classic treat with its Rainbow White brigadeiro, which comes decked out in colorful sprinkles encasing a rich white fudge center.
You can thank The End for unleashing the unicorn drink trend upon New York. The city’s most ‘grammable café is home to the original Unicorn Latte, a vibrant beverage chock-full of healing ingredients and topped with vegan star-shaped sprinkles and pomegranate powder.
