New York, New York! Love it or hate it, you’ve at least heard of it. Have you always wanted to try your hand at the New York lifestyle? Here, we provide you with ten of the best tips and tricks to live like a real New Yorker.

Drink Plenty Of Coffee

If Ambrosia is the nectar of the gods, then coffee is the nectar of this city. New York is, after all, the “City that Never Sleeps”, and that would be impossible without espresso. Luckily, New Yorkers have perfected the art of this holy hot beverage, so prepare to be impressed by basically any coffee stop.

Work Hard And Play Harder

New York is a place of passion. Whether you’re talking to an artist, musician, stockbroker, or businessman, you’ll probably notice one thing – they all have a drive unique to NYC. Maybe they feed off of one another’s energy, or maybe it’s something in the water, but that ‘go-getter’ attitude is always present. That being said, all of that hard work means some serious destressing. Perhaps that’s why the city’s happy hour specials are so awesome?

Take Some ‘Me’ Time

It’s easy to lose yourself in this city of roughly 8.5 million people, so it’s important to touch base. Some New Yorkers do yoga, some find a quiet place to write, and some visit art galleries or museums. Just find something that reminds you of your inner consciousness.

Explore The City With A Friend Or Two

Nothing is more fun than exploring the ins-and-outs of this amazing (and often overwhelming) city with a few friends. Looking to try that new sushi place down the block? Heard of an awesome concert happening a borough away? Nothing makes a train ride more bearable than having someone to chat with.

Keep An Open Mind

New York City is chock-full of new, unique, and amazing opportunities, so be sure to try as many things as possible. Don’t be afraid of new people, foods, or cultural activities – they may just turn into your new favorite things.

Try something new

Dress To Impress

New York is a city of personal expression, with millions of different styles found on the streets. But one thing is certain – New Yorkers like to look good. And really, can you blame them? NYC is one of the fashion capitals of the world. Strut your stuff with confidence and never be afraid to be daring.

No Gawking Allowed

Celebrity sightings are a common occurrence in New York, and as it turns out, celebrities are normal people just like you. You’ll also find your fair share of street performers and people just using the city to express themselves, so don’t stare, point, or scream. Didn’t your mother tell you that was rude?

Capture the sights

Stick To Subway Etiquette

Most ‘rules’ in New York are up to interpretation, but train etiquette is a must. No one particularly loves public transportation, but it’s a necessary evil in order to get to work, get home after a long day, or go out – and no one has time for you to hold the doors open for your friends. If the train is pretty packed, make sure to put any bags you have on the floor or in front of you. If you think you should offer that elderly person or pregnant woman your seat, chances are you definitely should.

Public transportation

Walk Fast

Nothing screams ‘tourist‘ like a leisurely walker. New Yorkers have places to go, and people to see. They don’t have time to admire the Empire State Building every single day. So please, keep up with sidewalk traffic, or step aside.

Be You

Lastly, if New York City has taught anyone anything, it’s that you should be yourself, and do what makes you happy.
