When you’re craving a club experience without the club crowd, look to New York City’s bar scene for your ideal establishment. Along with potent cocktails and tunes worth tapping your toes to, these New York City bars all feature dance floors so that when the drinks kick in, you can do some kicking of your own.
Kinfolk 90 (or Kinfolk 94)
Kinfolk comprises two venues: Kinfolk 90, a coffee shop by day and bar by night, and Kinfolk 94, the artsy partier’s answer to a typical nightclub. Both venues offer dancing, with Kinfolk 94 featuring a high-quality dance floor and disco ball and Kinfolk 90 providing a more low-key environment ideal for both conversation and dancing. Choose which scene is more your vibe, or keep the party going and try them both.
If you combined a dive bar and a dance club, the result would be Bossa Nova Civic Club, a Bushwick-based spot known as much for its obscure drinks as for its industrial techno soundtrack. Those willing to brave the M train will be rewarded with bottles of Club Mate, the caffeinated German soft-drink that Euro partiers rely on, and a dance floor filled with enthusiastic drinkers.

Battery Harris
Bar, Restaurant, Caribbean
A Caribbean restaurant and bar in North Williamsburg is already something of an anomaly, but Battery Harris’ impromptu dance parties elevate the spot to unicorn status. Not officially a dance floor, the open space at this Brooklyn bar is always claimed by dancing drinkers. Frozen drinks and large crowds bump Battery up into the neighborhood’s most unexpected weekend party.
Baby’s All Right
Music Venue
Baby’s All Right is the Brooklynite’s pick for drinking, dancing, and just about every other activity. When the Williamsburg spot isn’t serving up its popular bottomless brunch, you can bet it’s hosting a cult-favorite DJ or musical act, who perform to laid-back crowds enjoying cheap booze and dancing.
Bembe
Bar, Nightclub, Pub Grub
The next best thing to an actual vacation is getting down to global tunes at this compact cosmopolitan hangout. Salsa, merengue, reggaeton, hip-hop, and much more are what’s on offer at Bembe, where worldly crowds work up a sweat on the dance floor and cool off with powerful drinks such as mojitos and caipirinhas.
The Woods
Bar, Food Court, American
Even with its spacious backyard and stage and dance floor, The Woods gets packed on weekend nights. Much of that has to do with the music, which spans everything from New Order to ’90s Christina Aguilera and makes for an ideal dance soundtrack. Inexpensive drinks and on-site food carts are worth braving the Williamsburg gaggles for.
Home Sweet Home
Bar, American
If you ever leave Brooklyn (why would you ever need to?), Manhattan has its share of bumping bars as well. Decked out with taxidermy and plenty of seating, Home Sweet Home isn’t your average dancing destination, which turns out to be a good thing when you’ve tired yourself out moving to different DJ’s tunes and want to sit back and relax for a moment, just like at home.
Beauty Bar
Nightclub, Bar, Cocktail Bar, Pub Grub
Only in New York City can you enjoy a manicure, cocktail, and dance party all in one place—or, rather, only at Beauty Bar, a decades-old East Village establishment prepping you for and delivering the party all at once! In line with its retro décor, the bar eschews Top 40 in favor of hits from yesteryear, much to the delight of its freshly manicured partiers.
