Perth Amboy, NJ

Terrazza

Terrazza serves up contemporary Latin cuisine in a trendy, warm-toned interior. The menu emphasizes Cuban, Portuguese, and Spanish dishes. These include paella mixta, which consists of shrimp, chicken, chorizo, and clams simmered in saffron rice and red pepper. The restaurant also offers an excellent gluten-free menu, as well as a great selection of cocktails, wines, and beers. Amboy Asian Café

Try the Sweet Heart Roll, which features spicy salmon, tuna, yellowtail, seaweed salad, all wrapped with soy paper into a cute heart shape. The Black Angel Roll is another highlight. It features a blend of black pepper tuna, filet mignon, avocado, wasabi cream sauce, and eel sauce.

Troy Restaurant offers affordable Mediterranean fare in a down-to-earth setting. Owner Ugur Ince worked at a number of restaurants in Istanbul before opening Troy with his stepbrother in 2007. The restaurant’s menu is influenced by Greek, Israeli, Egyptian, and Turkish cuisines. It features a variety of soups, salads, pastas, pizzas, sandwiches, as well as meat and seafood entrées. The restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol, but diners are welcome to BYOB. The restaurant occasionally features live belly dancing performances.

Portuguese Manor

Open since 1989, the Portuguese Manor has a pleasantly old-fashioned atmosphere. The menu at this family-owned restaurant has changed little since it opened. Fortunately, the same goes for the budget-friendly prices. The menu offers a fine select of traditional Portuguese meat and seafood dishes, along with appetizers. Try the restaurant’s signature dish. It is filet mignon cooked in mushroom sauce and served flambé with Portuguese potatoes, veggies, and saffron rice. Live bands and DJs are often featured on weekends.

The Barge

Specializing in steaks and seafood, The Barge has been family-owned and operated since 1925. The restaurant overlooks the city’s historic waterfront, offering an intimate bar and dining area, as well as an upper floor dining room that can be rented for private parties. Live music performances often take place on the scenic outdoor patio during the warmer months. The restaurant offers a wide selection of meat and seafood entrées for dinner. There is also lighter fare such as sandwiches and wraps for lunch. Try one of the charcoal-grilled steaks or the broiled lobster, which is delivered fresh daily from Maine.

Marios Pizzeria

Marios Pizzeria is a family-owned restaurant that offers delicious pizzas, pastas, calzones, and Italian-influenced cuisine. Open since 1969, the restaurant has been managed by the same Sicilian family for three generations. Its eye-catching pink exterior gives way to a simple, unfussy interior with wooden tables. Try one of the pizzas, which feature a wonderfully thin crust, such as the Melanzana Sicilian pizza topped with eggplant, ricotta cheese, mozzarella, and tomato sauce. Or, go for the Penne Francesco, which is covered in a vodka sauce with hot pepper flakes, along with pecorino romano, and mozzarella cheese.

Don Manuel International Restaurant

Open since 2011, Don Manuel International Restaurant was awarded the ‘Best Food’ award at the 2015 edition of the Taste of Perth Amboy. As its name suggests, this modest restaurant’s menu draws on a variety of culinary influences. However, most are traditional Latin and Spanish dishes. The restaurant’s sandwiches, served with a side of fries, make an ideal quick lunch. For dinner, try a hearty mofongo (mashed fried plantains). Alternatively, go for a fish dish, such as red snapper or tilapia, which can be prepared fried or steamed.

Seabra's Armory

Located on Perth Amboy’s historic waterfront, Seabra’s Armory specializes in Portuguese cuisine, as well as seafood and steaks. The restaurant is set in a renovated naval ammunition building dating back to World War I. Its elegant interior offers lovely views of Raritan Bay and Staten Island. Try the rodizio, an assortment of grilled meats slow roasted over a charcoal pit and served alongside rice, collard greens, beans, fries, and fried bananas. This hearty dinner is best washed down with the restaurant’s signature sangria. This drink is made with red or white wine, brandy, orange liqueur, peach schnapps, orange juice, and fresh fruit.

SE Salio El Pollo

SE Salio El Pollo is an unassuming, casual restaurant that specializes in Peruvian cuisine. The menu features a great variety of traditional Peruvian dishes, including ceviche de pescado (fish marinated in lime juice, along with onions and sweet potatoes) and yuca a la huancaina (boiled cassava with cream sauce). Save room for some alfajores (Peruvian cookies filled with condensed milk). Also, be sure to enjoy an Inca Kola, Peru’s classic soft drink, alongside your meal.

Bread-n-Butter Bakery Cafe

Opened in 2014, the Bread-n-Butter Bakery Cafe is one of the more recent additions to Perth Amboy’s culinary scene. Its delicious desserts earned it recognition at the 2015 Taste of Perth Amboy event. This quaint, Puerto Rican-Dominican-style bakery is family-owned. It offers a great selection of sandwiches as well as traditional fare, such as pastelitos and empanadas. Go for the B-n-B House Special Sandwich, a combination of ham, pork, pastrami, mortadella, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
