On the shores of vast Lake Superior – one of America’s Great Lakes – Duluth is a handsome inland port. It’s a great place to enjoy outdoor activities in the Midwest, with myriad watersports and hiking trails. As this is the States’ snowiest spot, the skiing in this area is superb, with great facilities to ease you downhill. For a trip that balances both city life and outward bound fun, Duluth is ideal and there is nowhere better to stay than this selection of hotels with suites, all bookable with Culture Trip.
Converted from the 1885 Fitger’s Brewery, this hotel has a glorious lakeside location. All rooms are individually styled – some with bare brick walls and crimson armchairs, others with padded headboards and ye olde prints of historic Duluth. The whirlpool suites offer big baths-with-jets, plus city or lake views, and some have balconies overlooking Lake Superior. Romance your sweetie by the fireplace in the extra-large penthouse suite. You won’t be short on other entertainment here, either: there’s an entire mall of options, from the onsite micro-brewery where you can drink Fitger’s pale ale, to the Crank and Dasher ice cream parlor, to jazz bands at Rex Nightclub and signature whiskey cocktails at The Barrel Room.
With superb canal or harbor views through large plate-glass windows, South Pier is a striking white building with pitched roofs, set amid manicured green lawns at the water’s edge. Its twenty suites are decorated in classic creams, featuring leather tub chairs, comfortable beds and soft linen, and corner whirlpool bathtubs with views. There’s an outdoor fire pit and patio where you can sit and watch boats pass through the impressive feat of engineering that is the Aerial Lift Bridge, or else take a stroll across the bridge to the excellent Lake Superior Marine Museum.
Park Point Marina Inn is a resort hotel on Park Point, the world’s longest freshwater sand bar. This is one of the most serene places to stay of all the Duluth hotels with suites, and is especially good for families, with kid-friendly perks such as the indoor family center with pool and outdoor play park, while adult-friendly perks include saunas and hot tub. Want views? All but five of the 68 rooms have decks overlooking the yacht marina or the open waters of Lake Superior. Take advantage of the complimentary shuttle, or simply walk across the Aerial Lift Bridge to Canal Park, with its brewery, chocolate factory and numerous restaurants and fast food joints.
Overlooking the shore of Lake Superior, the Hilton Hampton Inn is one of the best Duluth hotels with suites due to its prime Canal Park setting. That makes this spot ideal not just for dining out, but for catching a Bulldogs game at the Amsoil Arena, a couple of blocks away. Not your bag? No problem, take the kids to the nearby Great Lakes Aquarium or catch up on a ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. The decorator stuck to the classic cream-and-gray palette when kitting out the airy rooms, though there are welcome pops of color in the form of turquoise lounge seating. Trade travel tales around the outdoor fire pit or work up a sweat at the fitness center.
Smart rooms offer comforts and nothing quirky at this large, modern Holiday Inn. Suites have a business-like look, with soft linen, sleek leather furnishings, muted colors and neat kitchenettes. Where this hotel particularly excels is in family-friendly entertainment, as here you’re a two-minute drive from the Adventure Zone Park in Canal Park, which offers Laser Tag, mini-golf, rock climbing, arcade games, trampoline and bungee jumping. Onsite kid-friendly attractions include heated indoor and kids’ pools, and the generous breakfast buffet comprises five types of donuts.
One of Duluth’s super-central hotels, these all-suite accommodations look out over the water from their prime Canal Park location. The sloped roofs, faux-stone exterior finish and wooden chairs on the wrap-around deck give the hotel a somewhat Alpine look, while the handsome, wood-paneled suites come with comfortable lounge areas, with expansive watery vistas a bonus for those who snag a lake-facing room. Locally popular restaurants such as Northern Waters Smokehaus and Grandma’s Saloon are just steps away, and if you want a greater range of dining choices, Downtown is also walkable.
Halfway between the airport and downtown Duluth, the stylish suites at Fairfield Inn have a contemporary-meets-mid-century aesthetic, with dark abstract carpets and blonde wood furnishings. Complimentary breakfast gives you a choice between a continental spread of hot dishes cooked to order; for something more substantial, drive to the Canal Park dining and entertainment hub, or else head for the Stone Ridge Shopping Center, two blocks away, for such casual options as Papa Murphy’s and Taco Bell.
