This Man Sent 65 of His Former Teachers on a Trip of a Lifetime, Just to Say Thank You
Teachers may touch the lives of their students far more than they realize. But not for Fredy, an alumnus of a State High School in Central Java, Indonesia, who went to great lengths to make his former teachers know how much he appreciates them.
In September, 65 of Fredy’s teachers from elementary, junior, and high school, flew to Indonesia’s neighboring Malaysia and Singapore for a vacation, fully financed by the former student. He covered all expenses from flights, accommodation, passport fees, meals, even daily allowances and fees for a few keepers and medical teams to take care of the elderly teachers.
Not just that, Fredy really went all out in making sure the trip was as pleasant as can be. As Fredy’s high school principal Sulikin put it, “Everything was first class. This is the most memorable trip of my life.” The principal, who still serves in the same institution now, wrote about his five-day experience in his personal blog, endearingly titled “My Student is Crazy.”
The “crazy student” is now a successful businessman in the fiber optic cable industry. His prosperous present doesn’t make him forget his dear teachers, many of whom are living a financially tough life or are retired.
Fredy did consider to just simply give them money but then decided that his gratitude was so big that it needed a more thoughtful gesture. He wanted his teachers to have fun, be happy, and enjoy each other’s company. Fredy could not join the trip, but he did make time to see them at the airport and gave each of his former teachers a hug before they departed.
In his social media post, Fredy poured out his heart by expressing how much he loves and appreciates his teachers. Especially those who are “crazy” enough to devote themselves to work in remote areas and keep teaching no matter how little salary they received. He said it is because of them that he could be where he is, and that if anyone deserves praise, it’s the teachers and not himself.
Fredy admits that he has always been in touch with his former teachers and that his heart breaks a little each time he sees or hears one of the teachers is facing a hardship in life. He was aware that his noble teachers do not receive nearly enough in return for their services.
Fredy’s strong affection towards his teachers was something he already held even way before, when he was still in high school. Sulikin claims that Fredy told a story about how he suffered a life-threatening accident in high school, and that he had dreamt that all his teachers came to visit him in the hospital. Since then, the high school student promised himself to someday do something really nice for his teachers. And he absolutely did.
