South Bend is a popular weekend destination – and no wonder. Just 1.5 hours drive from Chicago and 2.5 from Indianapolis, it’s a road trip waiting to happen. Visitors here love the wine at local vineyards, cheering at Notre Dame football games, and browsing classic cars at the Studebaker National Museum. Adventurers can even white water raft downtown or head out to try the ziplines at Rum Village Aerial Park. Enjoy it all from one of these great hotels in town – bookable on Culture Trip.

1. Morris Inn, for a piece of history

Originally founded by a successful former student in the early 20th-century, this 150-room hotel is owned by the world-famous Notre Dame University and is a fantastic way to feel part of campus life – while contributing to its upkeep. Guests can even make use of the campus sporting equipment including a bouldering wall, as well as the hotel’s own fitness center. The two restaurants – Rohr’s and the Wind Family Fireside Terrace – are well-reviewed and the former’s signature cocktail, the cherry-infused Hesburgh Manhattan, is a must-try.

2. Oliver Inn Bed and Breakfast, for a blend of old and new

This guesthouse looks like something out of a classic movie ‒ with the ambiance to match. Built in 1897, this Queen Anne-style building – complete with turret, gables, porches, and balustrades – has been rated “outstanding” by the Historic Preservation Commission. Thankfully, there are mod-cons within – including an in-room TV, air-con, and hot tubs. Home-made breakfast is served in front of the fire each morning and you can up the romance factor with one of the Oliver packages that add on roses, bubbles, and dinner.

3. Doubletree Hotel South Bend, for some rest and relaxation

This smart Hilton is located right on the Joseph River ‒ indeed, on the South Bend, which gives the city its name ‒ and adjoins the Century Center, making it super convenient for those in town for gigs, parties, and weddings. Relaxation is the focus of any stay here – from the airport shuttle to the reliable rooms, indoor pool, and comfort food. Think warm cookie on arrival and moreish chips with cheese curds at Baker’s Bar and Grille.

4. Ivy Court Inn & Suites, for modern amenities

There’s a real family feel to this hotel on the Notre Dame campus. Originally built as accommodation for the Special Olympics in 1987, today, it’s owned by university alumni and proudly hosts many who come to varsity events and graduations. Start the day with a cuppa from your in-room Keurig machine and a bespoke homemade breakfast – with eggs just as you like them – before working out in one of two fitness centers. Alternatively, borrow a bike to trawl around campus or just sit out on the porch to watch South Bend come to life.

5. The Inn at Saint Mary's, for family and pet-friendly fun

You can bring the whole family to this small hotel on St Mary’s College campus ‒ and we do mean everyone. The hotel makes special provisions for your family dog, with the use of a bed and water bowl, welcome pack, and do not disturb signs – in case they need their rest during the day. The location is great, too ‒ it’s a 15-minute walk to the main buildings of St Mary’s and a three-minute drive to Notre Dame.

Marriott’s Aloft brand always has a colorful, youthful vibe and this downtown South Bend number is no exception. Located near all three of the city’s colleges – as well as the College Football Hall of Fame and the Morris Performing Arts Center – it has its own cool-looking tapas bar, WXYZ, as well as 24-hour gym and indoor pool. Breakfast at Re:Fuel isn’t included but you won’t mind handing over cash for french toast this good. Picturesque windows in the bedrooms give great views over the city, too.
