Ovation Bistro & Bar

Bar, Bistro, Restaurant, American, $

With its casual and modern vibe, Ovation Bistro & Bar is popular with locals and visitors. This family-owned restaurant focuses on high-quality BBQ, with its ribs and steaks receiving high praise. The attention to detail does not stop at the food. Ovation’s large selection of craft beers includes rare finds such as Abita Purple Haze Raspberry Lager and Mama’s Little Yella Pils. There are also unusual cocktails like the blackberry agave margarita. Don’t forget about the delicious cheesecake for dessert.

Sh-booms Ice Cream & Sweet Treats

Hiding in an average-looking strip mall is Sh-booms Ice Cream & Sweet Treats, a 50s, rock ‘n’ roll-themed ice cream parlor. It is the ideal place to feed your inner sugar gremlin. Grab a booth, enjoy Elvis on the jukebox and make the most of the large selection of ice cream flavors and toppings, including the best-selling butter pecan. If you’re not in the mood for ice cream, try one of the scrumptious cheesecakes or cupcakes. Choose a traditional flavor or be adventurous and try a house special like caramel apple and peanut butter.

The Proper Pie Company

The Proper Pie Company, run by friendly British owners, is a small delicatessen selling typical British goods and food. The comforting homemade pies are clearly the highlight. Authentic favorites include beef shepherd’s pie, steak & Guinness pie, and traditional Cornish pasties. The pie shell is crispy, while the ingredients are fresh. If you don’t fancy pie, try the fish and chips, renowned for their tender, flaky fish fried in a light batter. For dessert, the fruit pies and traditional scones are popular, both with expats and locals. There are a few tables, but it’s mainly to-go orders.

Boardwalk Brothers

Market, Restaurant, Seafood, American

Tucked in the corner of a low-key flea market, Boardwalk Brothers brings Jersey-style grilled food to Florida. Their wings, crispy on the outside but tender on the inside, have attracted a loyal local following. They can be either traditional or boneless and come with a range of 13 sauces from which to choose. Try the infamous ghost pepper if you’re not afraid of spice. There’s also a big selection of hoagies, burgers and chicken sandwiches if you’re not in the mood for wings. It’s possible to eat-in during market opening hours, but it’s also just as easy to take something to go or order for delivery.

Giovanni’s Pizza

Giovanni’s Pizza is a relaxed, friendly place that makes yummy, large pizzas with a crunchy thin crust. The variety of pizzas is wide. The toppings are piled high, so you will not be searching with a magnifying glass for the three olives on your pizza. The garlic knots with garlic butter, Parmesan and a fresh tomato sauce make a perfect starter. The numerous pasta dishes and subs provide good alternatives.

Kumo

Restaurant, Japanese, $

Kumo doesn’t look like much from the outside, and inside, the decor is nothing to get excited about. However, the beautifully presented sushi does deserve getting excited about. For traditionalists, there is the extensive sashimi and teriyaki list. But for those who appreciate creativity, there are the house specials like Madame Butterfly with eel, avocado, wrapped in shrimp tempura, topped with eel sauce and red tobiko or Top of the World comprising yellowtail scallion, wrapped in spicy tuna and tempura flakes. The service is efficient and friendly.

Q’Kenan

Restaurant, Venezuelan

For something a little different, hop in the car and drive towards Orlando for the one of the area’s best Venezuelan restaurants, Q’Kenan. It’s a small, informal restaurant where you will receive a truly Latin welcome and have the opportunity to eat some authentic Venezuelan dishes. Try the arepas — a crispy flatbread made from corn flour with different fillings. Or go for the pabellon, which is the Venezuelan version of the rice and beans dish found across the Caribbean. Typically, it includes shredded beef and can be accompanied by a fried egg and fried plantain slices.
