Between Denver and the ski resort of Aspen, there are many excellent winter sports destinations in view of the Rocky Mountains. One example is Keystone, Colorado, where you’ll find 131 ski trails, more than half of which are black diamond or double black diamond pistes. Chances are, if you’re visiting Keystone to spend time in the great outdoors, you won’t be be in your hotel for long. At Keystone Lodge, the deer-antler chandeliers and Rocky Mountains views let you know you’re staying on the cusp of wilderness, but the luxury of the heated pool, steam room and outdoor hot tub serves as a nice juxtaposition. The lodge is rich with facilities, including a sports bar, cocktail lounge and grill restaurant. If you do make it outside, the free Gondola Express bus regularly shuttles guests to and from the slopes.

Stay right on the shore of Keystone Lake – which becomes an ice rink in winter – at Lakeside Village Condominiums. When the lake isn’t frozen, you can book activities such as paddleboarding and canoeing with the hotel. Rooms have large communal spaces and beds with plush duvets to stave off the cold weather, while the restaurant serves big plates of comfort food.

In River Run Village, Buffalo Lodge is a great option for those looking for quick and easy access to the slopes of the Keystone Resort. The main gondola is less than five minutes’ walk away, offering access to dozens of pistes for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. The rooms are designed in a crisp, modern blend of pine and cream tones, with access to the main bars and restaurants of the resort on the doorstep.

Self-contained and ideal for visitors wishing to take care of their own dining needs is the accommodation at Gateway Mountain Lodge. Options range from studio apartments for couples to larger condos with up to four bedrooms. Each contains a fridge and microwave, with fully equipped kitchens making cooking for the whole group easy and efficient.
