Beautiful weather, vineyards, and fantastic local craft breweries make Fresno an ideal spot to visit. As one of California‘s largest cities, Fresno is also an amazing place to hear live music. Culture Trip rounds up spots where you can groove to tunes in this NorCal city.

The Starline
Bringing in both local and big name bands, The Starline is one of the most popular live music venues among Fresno’s younger crowd, thanks to the 18 and up age restriction and oftentimes lack of any age restriction at all. Past performers have included favorites like Faith and Muse, so if you want to avoid lesser known bands and crowds of youth, you can watch the lineups for the bands you like, and it will be a fantastic venue. The reasonably priced, heavily poured strong drinks and efficient bartenders also make it a great experience. In addition, there are plenty of tables so that guests can comfortably sit and enjoy their beers while watching the performers play. They also have popular Salsa nights on Thursdays, with free salsa lessons and dancing all night long. In addition, there’s a great grill bar next door called Starline Grill if you’re looking for something to eat while there or if the music venue’s bar is too crowded and you want a quick drink.

Engelmann Cellars
In 2000, Bret Engelmann started Engelmann Cellars in an old raisin shed that his grandfather build on the 200-acre family vineyard in 1957. Today, the company is run by Bret and his wife Elainea, who’ve brought the wine up to 3000 cases a year with 85 percent sold directly to the customer in their tasting room or online. The small boutique winery focuses on quality in the vineyard that is carried throughout the small batch winemaking process to create truly exceptional wines at a great value to customers. They have a 1.5 acre Vineyard Park that is used for picnics, weddings, reunions, and the Friday Night Wine Tasting in the summer months. In addition, every Friday from May to September, they host live music in the park. The events are only for people over 21, and guests bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and a wine glass, then find a great spot to enjoy the music and drinks while watching the always spectacular sunsets. There are also two or three food trucks on the premises every Friday night to complement the wines.

The Tasting Room
Owned by local wine lovers Catherine and Laura, The Tasting Room is one of the best spots in Fresno for wine tasting, specializing in boutique wines and craft beers from the Central Coast, Napa, California, and around the world. They always have a new Tasting List and an ever-changing “By the Glass” menu. The staff are all very friendly and knowledgable, helping customers build their own personalized wine tasting flights. It is also the Central Valley’s best venue in which to enjoy a live jazz trio every Friday night from 7-10pm, with no cover and no reservations required. The band is set up right when you walk in the door, and the place is somewhat small and narrow, perfect for a cozy and intimate time with a small group of friends or for a date night. With comfy couches and big chairs to sit on while enjoying your wines and beer, the atmosphere is so comfortable and relaxing that folks often find themselves staying for hours. They also host live music most Saturday nights, and visitors can call ahead to see who’s playing.

Eureka!
Since it was established in 2010, Eureka! has set out to be a collection of America’s best, featuring an elevated American selection of craft beer, small-batch whiskey, regional wine, and locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant offers a jubilant atmosphere with handpicked house music, televised sports, and weekly events like Steal the Glass and live music featuring the singer songwriter of the week. With a name that comes from the interjection used as an exclamation of triumph at a discovery, Eureka! aims to provide its guests with an enlightening burger experience, accompanied by fresh ingredients, artisan recipes, craft beer, classic cocktails, and rock “n” roll. Locals love hanging out at the restaurant while enjoying a delicious burger, the great selection of beer, and having fun watching a game or listening to a fantastic band.

ApCal
Set in the country, surrounded by vineyards and no neighbors, ApCal (short for Appellation – California) is one of the best outdoor live music venues in the Valley, known as the place to relax, hear live music, dance, drink, see old friends, and party. Conveniently located just of Hwy 99 and Ave 7, visitors can enjoy the music and wine in 15-20 minutes from nearly anywhere in the Fresno or Madera area. It’s best to bring a lawn chair or blanket with you when visiting, as there is only a limited amount of seating, but you can even bring your dog, thanks to ApCal’s pet-friendly environment. With a nearly 75-foot bar and the beautiful California sunset over the vineyards, 50 locally produced wines available for tasting by glass or by the bottle, as well as three styles of Riley’s Brewing draft beer and an onsite caterer offering a new fresh and tasty menu at each event (though you can bring your own picnic basket if you want), ApCal stands out from the rest of the entertainment venues in the area. It is a beautiful, comfortable, and safe place where you can not only enjoy the best live music and dancing, but also relax and talk with your friends without having to scream.
