With more than 1m passengers crossing its platforms each year, Sacramento Valley Station is an important transport hub in California and a major Amtrak hub nationally. The station is also downtown, so whether you’re arriving in the city late, leaving early or want to stay somewhere central, these top hotels – bookable on Culture Trip – offer plenty of comfort on your journey.

Want to stay as close to the Sacramento Valley Station as possible? Well, you can’t get much closer than the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel. This luxury, modern hotel is indicative of Sacramento’s importance as the state capital of California and celebrates this in style, with flourishes of contemporary architecture and art. Rooms employ earthy tones through Californian oak furniture and patterned charcoal-colored headboards. On the third floor, there’s a leafy oasis with a large pool at its center.

The Old Sacramento Waterfront is minutes from the train station and a great place to see old locomotives and riverboats. One of the latter, the Delta King, was even transformed into the most unique hotel in Sacramento. The staterooms on the boat – built in 1927 – have been refurbished to blend a taste of the past with modern standards. The Captain’s Quarters is a suite occupying the former wheelhouse (the wheel is still visible), with a wraparound veranda, a wet bar and expansive riverfront views.

The Citizen Hotel, Autograph Collection

The Citizen Hotel, built in 1925, wouldn’t look out of place in Manhattan. The elegant architecture is a wrapper concealing a confection of amenities within. The impressive lobby is a vast hall, overlooked by rows of books, that gives way to a restaurant and bar area. Throughout the hotel, including the rooms, political cartoons are the decorative art of choice, offering a light and whimsical take on past political events.

Governors Inn Hotel

Budget Hotel

North of Sacramento Valley Station is Governors Inn Hotel, where you can also get a complimentary airport shuttle if you’re planning to mix your modes of transportation. This hotel is a good option for those who want to watch their budget without sacrificing important amenities, such as comfortable beds, free breakfasts or a coffee maker, and offers rooms with enhanced access for guests with reduced mobility. You can also take advantage of the outdoor swimming pool and spa.

Hyatt Regency Sacramento

Chain Hotel

Overlooking the California State Capitol and its surrounding park is the Hyatt Regency, a highly popular hotel with a steakhouse, a cafe and a Starbucks, as well as separate independent Mexican, pizza and sushi restaurants in the same building. If that wasn’t enough dining choices, the lobby bar also serves light bites alongside classic cocktails. Rooms are generously proportioned, and the best have a view of the Capitol.

Rooms feature a color palette of warm reds, yellows and creams, and even the smallest studios offer a living area, a dining space and a kitchen with a stovetop, a microwave, a fridge and a dishwasher. And if you’re looking for somewhere to keep in shape, there’s a small pool and a fitness center. Alternatively, the 40-acre (16ha) California State Capitol Park is right across the street.

KEEN TO EXPLORE THE WORLD?

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
