Los Angeles is changing up its game with breadmaking and there are a few places out there that are definitely putting up competition for the more well-known New York and San Francisco delicacies. We list the best places to get fresh artisanal loaves in the city of the angels.

République boasts a delicious variety of breads, but it’s mostly known for its multigrain bread that satisfies the taste of any health aficionado who’s looking for a little carb fix. Set in the original home of LaBrea Bakery, République seems to have inherited the 20 year of tradition for making amazing breads, and everything coming out of their oven is so overwhelmingly good.

Lodge Bread

Tucked in the heart on Venice, Gjusta is one of the busiest bakeries in the city because of its great bread and proximity to the beach, as the guest can choose their favorite loaf and head over to the beach to enjoy it. Run by chef Travis Lett, Gjusta only uses organic flours in the dough mixes, yielding great products like the Sesame Wheat Sourdough or the Hemp Nori.

Paris Baguette

With over 10 retail locations in LA, Paris Baguette is even more tempting as there seems to be one at every corner. From flaky croissants to incredibly crunchy French baguettes and everything in between, Paris Baguette has something for every taste. It is one of the few franchise bakeries that has been able to sustain the same quality of products around the world for the past 30 years.

Proof Bakery

A quirky bakery where stellar croissants come from, thats Proof Bakery. From regular croissants to chocolate, almond or the European style ham and gruyere, Proof takes baking to a whole new level. The loaves are such a savory treat that they don’t even appear on the printed menu, as they change weekly depending on the local availabilities and the bakers’ creations. However, the croissants and the brioches as well as some other lovely pastries are available everyday.

The Rose

The Rose has undergone major remodeling to bring to life the wonderful place it is today. It is easily becoming the go-to place for both French people and French baguette lovers alike who are looking for that type of bread that has a crunchy crust and a soft and airy inside. The two owners are on a mission to bake the best breaks while using products from the local Venice farmers market.

SEED Bakery

SEED Bakery is one of those old school bakeries that makes customers think about country mills and fields of grains, as they actually use old traditions for stone-milling the grains, fermenting the dough and then baking the bread without any commercial non-organic additives. Everything is organic, fresh-milled and fresh-baked, therefore customers will have a hard time choosing between so many delicious varieties like the durum, farro or einkorn as well as the classics, like 100% rye or whole grain rustic country.

Schwartz Bakery

For anyone looking for the perfect challah bread to put in the table for a Shabbat dinner as well as baked goods for every holiday, Schwartz Bakery is the place to go. This kosher bakery has earned its reputation in the Jewish community for over 60 years, with the bakery being a family business for over 30 years. With 5 locations in the Los Angeles area, customers are bound to find their kosher indulgences no matter where life takes them.
