Workout amid the vines, indulge in a grape-based scrub or relax the wine-country way with a glass of California cabernet at these knot-kneading Napa retreats.

Home to mountains, rivers and thermal waters, Napa was a wellness getaway long before it became a wine region. The Wappo tribe discovered hot springs at the base of Mount St Helena thousands of years ago, and wellness resorts have existed in the valley since the 1800s. Today, this chic California enclave has evolved into a thoroughly modern wellness destination with countryside-inspired spas, sparse Zen hideaways and holistic retreats with soothing natural hot springs. Whatever you choose, the region’s inky cabernet and farm-fresh food are always in reach, ensuring you return refreshed – but never deprived – from a stay at these nurturing Napa hotels.

Carneros Resort’s guest-only spa plants wellness seekers in the middle of the healing Napa countryside. However, there’s nothing “country” about the decor. With a herringbone-tiled fireplace, the sophisticated lounge has doors opening up onto a patio with lounge chairs. Skilled therapists specialize in de-stressing treatments, such as the Quiet Mind massage that includes essential oils and techniques to release muscle tension and clear the mind. Problem skin? The Clarify skincare treatment leaves it healthy and balanced. Athletic guests can stay on the front foot throughout their stay with Theragun massage tool rentals, walks and runs through vineyards and free yoga on a platform overlooking pastoral rolling hills.

Bardessono

This modern hotel in the heart of Yountville wants you to detox from your busy device-filled life the moment you step through the door. Uncluttered guest rooms sport clean lines, neutral colors and outdoor showers – elements designed to help you sleep deeper. The fresh cuisine at Lucy uses many ingredients grown in the restaurant’s on-site garden. Healthy but delicious dishes include steak frites with garden greens and miso soup with golden shallots. At B Spa, treatments, such as the Farm to Spa, change with the seasons. For example, in spring, elements are chosen for aromatherapy and wraps that renew and purify, while in winter, it’s all about enhancing the immune system. Make sure you take time out (phone-free, naturally) at the hotel’s rooftop pool, too.

Milliken Inn Creek and Spa

Hotel

The Main House at Milliken Creek Inn and Spa was a stagecoach stop on what is known as the Silverado Trail; it still has the original staircase and fireplace brought over from England in the 19th century. Being near the Napa River, weary travelers sought rest there during the gold and silver rush. The hotel has embraced this legacy with relaxing guest rooms with fine linens, rain showers and hydrotherapy tubs, and a renowned spa. Therapists can do 75-, 90- and 105-minute massages, and couples’ massages are offered under a canopy, with the sounds of the babbling river in the background. The property’s 100-year-old Japanese maple, live oak and magnolia trees, courtesy of one-time owner horticulturalist Ira McKenzie, add to the serenity.

The luxury spa is one of the main draws at Hotel Yountville, a luxurious lodge-like hideaway with Napa River rock buildings, heavy timber beams and copper accents. Book one of the six treatment rooms, including two couples’ suites with Swiss showers and double hydrotherapy tubs, for a purifying mud wrap, table Thai massage or aromatherapy facial. Private yoga sessions tailored to your preferences can also be arranged, while the swimming pool surrounded by firepits, daybeds and oak trees inspires unplugging.

Indian Springs Calistoga

Californian Sam Brannan created the original spa, mud baths and water “plunge” (now Olympic-size mineral pool) at Indian Springs Calistoga in 1861. Various owners have revamped and expanded the destination over the years, but the focus remains on the tradition of “taking the waters.” Four thermal geysers produce the mineral-rich water that runs through the property, while the land’s volcanic ash is used to create mud for the famous mud baths. You can sip cucumber-citrus water while relaxing at the Buddha Pond before and after treatments, such as the Indian Springs Classic Mineral Soak or the Verde Salt Scrub (California sun-evaporated sea salt combined with organic olive, sweet almond and jojoba oils).

River Terrace Inn

Spa Hotel

The spacious, airy rooms at Downtown Napa’s River Terrace Inn – a city hotel mixed with a wine-country getaway – have been designed with relaxation in mind. Even some entry-level rooms have jetted bathtubs and balconies with river views. Still, it’s all about the Junior Suites, featuring dual-sided fireplaces next to king-size beds with fluffy mattresses that encourage rest and rejuvenation. While River Terrace Inn doesn’t have a spa, deep-tissue or aromatherapy massages can be done in the comfort of guest rooms. And fitness enthusiasts can break a sweat in the gym with Precor treadmills, ellipticals and foam rollers. The hotel encourages you to visit lesser-known Napa sites, such as the 217-acre (88ha) di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, with its olive trees, vineyards, lake and numerous artworks.

Hotel Villagio at the Estate Yountville

The Estate in Yountville is a 22-acre (9ha) retreat comprising two hotels, a five-bedroom villa, an upscale ivy-covered shopping center, a restaurant and a spa. The spa features fountains, waterfalls, luxurious spa suites, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, Swiss experience showers, saunas and outdoor soaking baths. The Crush treatment, inspired by the estate’s vineyards, delivers a scrub of crushed grape seed and cane sugar followed by an antioxidant-rich body butter massage. Hotel Villagio’s guest rooms are sanctuaries made for pampering, complete with contemporary furniture, free-standing bathtubs, wood-burning fireplaces and shuttered windows that flood the spaces with natural light.

Mount View Hotel and Spa

Created by a visionary with more than 30 years of experience in luxury spas, the spa at downtown Calistoga’s Mount View Hotel has one of the valley’s most transformational treatment menus. Dozens of holistic options include a Himalayan salt-stone massage that reduces inflammation and a CBD wrap with mind-lulling sound healing (indeed, Mount View Spa is a big proponent of the healing benefits of CBD). Spa-goers can take a dip in the heated pool or relax in the mineral whirlpool. Built in 1919, the hotel has Mission Revival architecture and art deco interiors with curved burgundy-colored sofas, richly patterned wallpapers and textiles, and gleaming light fixtures.

For a more humble but no less relaxing stay, you should check into the 13-room EuroSpa and Inn in Calistoga. The shaded property has rooms in various one-story buildings, an outdoor heated pool and a hot tub. The tidy guest rooms feature country-inspired decor, whirlpool tubs, woodstove fireplaces and redwood decks with bistro chairs. You can take breakfast or sip wine at sunset next to an outdoor fireplace on the large covered terrace. The Old Faithful Geyser of California is just a little more than 2mi (3km) away and makes an excellent picnic spot.

All rooms have French doors that open onto patios for watching soft pink sunrises or fiery sunsets over Napa. Large two-story SENZA Lofts have open-concept bedrooms and bathrooms with balconies overlooking the vineyard, a professional kitchen, a living area with a sofa bed and fireplace.
