Arizona is known for many things, one of those being their direct location to the border of Mexico, so it’s no surprise that their neighbors south of the border have influenced the people, culture and food of AZ. Read our list to discover the best Mexican food joints in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Mucha Lucha

Named after a beloved Mexican wrestling character, Mucha Lucha is a delicious restaurant in the Scottsdale area. The menu is the best of traditional Mexican cuisine, including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and desserts. Locals favor the build-your-own spicy shrimp tacos, surf and turf burrito, macho fries, wet chimichanga, and quesadilla. Pair your meal with a Mexican cola, and then top it off with hot churros or tasty flan. The restaurant is casual, the portions large, and the staff friendly. Be on the lookout for cool wall paintings of Mexican wrestlers.

Wadaa Street Tacos

Wadda may be a small shack within a wall, but their street tacos are a Scottsdale staple. The tasty taqueria serves tacos with chicken and carne asada steak, both prepared on a coal-fired grill. Choose between soft flour tortillas or crunchy corn tortillas, and then top off your taco with cheese, cabbage, fresh limejuice, and homemade pico de gallo. Tacos are cheap, service is extremely fast, and the stand is open into the wee hours of the night. Swing by for lunch during the workday or for a midnight snack after a night on the town.

The Blind Pig

Voted ‘Best of the Valley’ by Phoenix Magazine, The Blind Pig is a restaurant and bar that serves creative, yet authentic, Mexican cuisine. They serve dishes such as pig wings, nachos, avocado bruschetta, fresh oysters, crispy taquitos, shrimp and corn tamales, Mexican pizza, and wild mushroom quesadillas. Also on offer are a variety of tacos, including caramelized pork, braised beef, grilled mahi mahi, and pulled chicken. Not only is the food at The Blind Pig amazing, so are the refreshing cocktails. Enjoy a Mexican martini or Paloma Fresca out on the spacious patio. If you just can’t get enough, ask the friendly staff about catering an event, or purchase meat at their on-site butcher shop. Be on the look out for ice cream Tuesdays and fresh, handmade desserts.

SumoMaya

Get the best of both worlds when you visit SumoMaya. The Scottsdale restaurant serves Mexican and Asian dishes that are bold, flavorful, and remarkably delicious. The beautiful interior is brightly decorated with colors of magenta, purple, orange, and blue. SumoMaya serves everything from ceviche to sushi. Look out for five different types of guacamole, tacos, fried rice, ramen, steak, fresh fish, and more. The restaurant is more than happy to make your meal vegetarian or gluten-free upon request. Be sure to make a reservation, whether you are part of a large or small party. SumoMaya is very popular, especially for hosting private events and special ocassions. With such incredible food, intimate atmosphere, and inviting outdoor patio, it’s not surprising that it’s such a hit.

The Mission

This broken plate concept restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy an array of Latin American dishes. Start with appetizers like duck carnitas empanadas, jalapeno chicken wings, and shrimp skewers. For entrees, enjoy a variety of tacos served in hand-pressed tortillas, or dishes served ‘A la Parilla’ or ‘A La Plancha’. Any of these choices pair perfectly with one of the many side dishes available, as well as a refreshing drink. Choose a creative cocktail, tequila flight, cerveza, or premium wine, available by the glass or bottle. The Mission makes it their mission to serve you the best food possible, and they succeed!
