Most people know that Alaska is home to some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery in the world, but when it comes to finding a great place to eat that isn’t a tourist trap or exclusively seafood, many will be at a loss. What if you just want a good burger? Never fear, because we’ve created a list of the best burgers you can get in Alaska’s capital, Juneau.

Front Street Café

Located inside of The Imperial Billiards & Bar, Juneau’s oldest saloon, Front Street Café serves up freshly made burgers, sandwiches, fried chicken, and pub food every day from 11am until the bar closes. It is one of the few places in town that uses fresh ground beef in their burgers instead of frozen patties, and they also make all of their own sauces and sausages. All of the burgers are build-your-own with toppings including seven different kinds of cheese, caramelized onion, jalapeños, sweet peppers, sautéed mushrooms, bacon, fried egg, ham, and even an extra patty if that’s not enough for you. The fried chicken, honey barbecue ribs, and super tots are also very popular menu items.

The Hot Bite

For over 32 years, The Hot Bite has sold fantastic burgers and shakes in the Auke Bay Harbor, just 13 miles north of downtown Juneau. A seasonal restaurant, The Hot Bite features charbroiled hamburgers, all-natural buffalo burgers, locally caught fish, house-made chowder and chili, pork or beef barbecues, stuffed portable mushroom sandwiches, and their famous creamy milkshakes in dozens of flavors. Some favorites are the all-natural buffalo burger and the peanut butter milkshake. Prices are a little higher than you might be used to if you’re visiting from the continental US, but all who visit and try the burgers and shakes say that it’s worth it.

McGivney’s Sports Bar & Grill

Tucked away in the heart of the Mendenhall Valley next to the mall, McGivney’s Sports Bar & Grill is a cozy space filled with TV’s tuned into your favorite game. Their Old Fashioned Burger is one of the most popular items on their menu, and one of the most popular burgers in town. This huge half pound handmade grilled burger is served with lettuce, pickle, tomato, and onion, and you can also add cheese, bacon, jalapeños, or mushrooms for a little more money. McGivney’s has made a name for itself in Juneau as the place to be for sports, drinks, and a great burger.

Devil’s Hideaway

Overlooking the beautiful Auke Bay sits Devil’s Hideaway, home to some of the best burgers in town. Their pub style beef burgers, served on a toasted bun and dressed with their Chipotle Mayo sauce, are a huge hit among Juneau residents. Folks love to chow down on the Purgatory Burger, the Spicy Burger, or even a burger of their own creation. All burgers also come with tasty fries or tots. This is not a place you’ll want to bring the kids to, however, as you must be at least 21 years of age to enter the establishment. This does mean that it’s a great place for a drink, though.

Rockwell

Rockwell serves up delicious cooking made from scratch in the old Elks Hall in the heart of historic downtown Juneau. They are famous for their Kobe Burger and hearty ‘Iron Man’ Flat-Iron Steak, as well as their numerous vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menu options. The menu is constantly expanding, and they also have a rotating selection of house baked desserts. For meat lovers, the Rockwell Wagyu Burger is extremely popular. It consists of a 1/3 pound burger cooked to order, pub buns, garlic aioli, butter leaf lettuce, tomato, and pickled red onion. The vegans and vegetarians out there can also find an outstanding burger in the Falafel Burger, made up of a crispy house patty, cilantro tzatziki, beefsteak tomato, carrot, radish, and mixed greens. The Poutine Fries and Sweet Potato Tempura are also well-loved by all.
