Seafood is the name of the game in Baja California, and lobster lovers should not miss out on Puerto Nuevo. Just a 35-minute drive from the border with San Diego, the fishing village of less than 200 inhabitants boasts dozens of lobster restaurants. Boiled lobster is available, but if you make the journey south you should try it the local way – pan-fried in lard, so the meat stays deliciously tender. Here’s a rundown of the 10 best places to eat lobster in Puerto Nuevo.

Expect to stand in line if you visit Restaurant Puerto Nuevo #1, this is without doubt Puerto Nuevo’s most popular eatery. The lobster is mouth-wateringly good, with soft and succulent meat in a crispy brown envelope. Unlike Maine lobsters, you’ll find these fried and clawless crustaceans very easy to eat. With its casual and cozy atmosphere, it is no surprise that the restaurant has achieved legendary status in the region.

This huge restaurant is hard to miss, not just because of its size but because of the giant brass shark sculpture located just outside. A little pricier than many of its rivals, the service, food and atmosphere at Villa Ortega’s are all excellent. With space for more than 500 people, the restaurant has three separate dining areas. We recommend sitting on one of the two large patio decks that overlook the sea, so you can enjoy the crashing waves or setting sun as you tuck into your fresh lobster dinner.
