The Best Rooftop Bars in Mexico City

Balmori, in the trendy Roma neighborhood, is an utterly chic spot. Colorful hanging plants shelter the bar from the elements, while the stars still peek through at night. Dishes such as serrano ham pizza and grilled sea bass with zaatar are small, and can be shared tapas-style. The real standouts here are the cocktails, however, which change seasonally – think mezcal topped with orange jam and agave honey, alongside pineapple margaritas rimmed with habanero pepper.

Take a seat at this rooftop bar along the busy Avenida Álvaro Obregón in Roma, which offers prime views of the nearby skyscrapers. Come to Supra to relax – booths are cushy and hand-woven rugs line the floors – and watch friends split a hookah setup (the bar has its own flavors). Cocktails are creative, including a gin and soursop liqueur mix and a fruity guava, hibiscus and vodka spritzer.

It’s part of a hostel, so you may not think much of this rooftop bar downtown. But just wait and see – Terraza Catedral in the centro histórico is just across the street from the Metropolitan Cathedral, the biggest and oldest cathedral in Latin America. Beyond the views, it’s also party central: DJs switch from spinning US hip-hop, Latin rock and European dance with ease, and beers flow all night. One word of caution: some events require a ticket in advance and frequently sell out. Check before you go.

Less party hub and more pre-siesta snacks and beer spot, Terraza Cha Cha Chá is a great pitstop after touring downtown all afternoon. It serves killer tacos, seafood tostadas and marlin empanadas, a stone’s throw from the Monumento a la Revolución. Top it off with a national beer, such as a Corona or Modelo, or opt for a craft beer, maybe a Colimita lager or Súper Lupe IPA. Want real street cred? Locals refer to a beer as una chela – your “una cerveza, por favor,” may just give you away.

Upon walking into the Hotel City Centro downtown, you’re greeted with glimmering marble floors, high mirrored ceilings and gilded arched walkways. Take an elevator to the top, and you’re transported to Malaquita, which seems futuristic in comparison. A raised salt-and-pepper-color pool sits in the corner, close to the cactus-shaped wall lining the patio. At the bar, resident mixologists sling funky cocktails and shake up giant jars of candy-flavored drinks to share.

On the south end of the city, Loretta is a short walk from the lively markets, museums and churches in San Ángel. The dining room is plush, but it’s the rooftop you’ll want to see. Kombucha cocktails, lemongrass fizzes and Bloody Marías top the menu, and you can always order from the restaurant side, as well – the Greek bistro’s moussaka and gyros are particularly good.

This rooftop restaurant and bar is surrounded by tall glass windows, offering you views of the Santa Fe skyscrapers even during the rainy season. Red clay tiles and woven wicker chairs give Central Central a rustic vibe, and tapas-like brie croquettes and tostas topped with jocoque are a perfect pre-dinner appetizer.
