More mellow than neighboring Huatulco, Puerto Escondido is a small fishing village and surfers haven that in the past 20 years has boomed as a favorite spot for tourists on the Oaxacan coast. While still less of a luxury crowd, the town now offers more food, drink and entertainment that it ever has in the past and has a wide range of hotels to suit different budgets and travel styles.

A hidden paradise just a short ways from Puerto Escondido, this hotel has its own private stretch of beach as well as an Olympic-size pool. Run by the oh-so-chic Grupo Habita out of Mexico City, private casitas have a view of the ocean and hammocks to swing in on your private patio. The standard rooms overlook the hotel gardens and the other, higher categories have ocean views. The Villas Carrizalillo are a collection of 12 beachside villas that range in size from 1-bedroom studios to three-bedroom units. Each of the villas are slightly different, with an overarching decor that is simple, yet warm and welcoming, with wooden accents, Mexican tiles and patterns and bechy touches like hammocks and outdoor rocking chairs. Each villa has great sunset views and all but three have kitchens for the benefits of a house rental without the hassle. There is an on-site restaurant, daily cleaning service, wi-fi and a swimming pool, as well as a library and game room. While the location is perfectly isolated overlooking the bay of Playa Carrizalillo, the villas are a short distance from town and the airport and walking distance of shops to buy basic supplies.
