Even with stiff competition from picture-perfect Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende arguably takes the title of Mexico’s most beautiful city. Famed for its Baroque architecture and as the birthplace of Ignacio Allende, San Miguel also boasts a surprisingly good range of Italian restaurants to discover.

Mare Nostrum

Restaurant, Italian

American travellers looking for a popular and authentic Italian haunt to check out should consider Mare Nostrum is the place to be, particularly if they want to be surrounded by fellow country people. Not to say that others shouldn’t head down to this fantastic and rustic looking restaurant, with its hand painted signs and generous portions. The pasta is all handmade and fresh, giving this lovely spot a delightfully homely feel.

Firenze

Restaurant, Italian, Mediterranean, European, Gluten-free, Vegetarian

Despite having recently undergone renovations, Firenze is still one of the best Italian options in town, and a warm welcome from the owner is always guaranteed. The choices, while not ample, are always exquisite, with options beyond the typical pasta dishes. We recommend any of the seafood options, which are fresh and flavourful, and the famous short ribs entrée is famous for a reason.

Antigua Trattoria Romana

Restaurant, Mexican

This centrally located, quaint and authentic Italian restaurant is regularly rated as one of the best in San Miguel. Aside from the convenient location, Antigua Trattoria Romana is welcoming and the pizza is one of the best options on the menu. In fact, all their breads are perfectly baked and delicious.

Casa Chiquita

For pizza lovers seeking something a little out of the ordinary, there is no better place than Casa Chiquita. The basics: the pizzas are thin and crispy, well baked, and there is a veritable smorgasbord of toppings to take your pick from, any of which are great choices. They also pair extremely well the craft beers on offer. However, what makes this place really special is the superb view from the rooftop.

Los Olivos de Denver

Formerly Olivo Verde, Los Olivos de Denver has rebranded yet still offers the same slow cooked delights. Now a slightly larger establishment, but still with only six tables, it offers a truly intimate yet casual experience where you can watch your food being prepared. Don’t be fooled though, even with their slow cooking techniques, dishes are served quickly meaning you won’t be waiting all evening to get stuck in.

Mi Vida

Restaurant, Italian, Mexican

Bloggers have claimed that Mi Vida has the best Italian fish soup in Mexico, with the tasting menus coming just as highly recommended, allowing you to try out all the Italian delights that this classy establishment has to offer. If you want one dish, we recommend the risotto. The ingredients are clearly top quality, and the service is second to none, with the wine even decanted prior to being poured.
