As surrounding neighborhoods such as the Mile End become increasingly gentrified, Mile-Ex is considered to be an up-and-coming district in Montreal. Attracting mainly creatives and young professionals, this former industrial area is attracting new cafés, restaurants, bars, and art-filled spaces that occupy old factories and garages. Here are some of the best cafés to visit in this unusual neighborhood.

1. Dispatch Coffee

Cafe, Canadian, Coffee, Pastries, Dessert

Dispatch began as a mobile vendor, and it has since emerged as a key player in Montreal’s coffee scene. There are three locations across the city, including a Mile-Ex hot spot that also operates as a thoughtful roastery, offering rich brews with an emphasis on quality and sustainability. There are pastries available, and you can also enjoy a light breakfast or lunch while you’re there.

2. Café Union

Cafe, Canadian, Coffee, Tea , Fast Food, Vegetarian

Café Union is a small shop that offers international coffees that are roasted on-site. They also sell, rent, and repair coffee machines and mills, and supply coffee to many restaurants and cafés across Montreal. They’ve been around through different iterations for almost 100 years. Come for the variety and quality of the blends and brews.

3. Moustache Café

Cafe, Coffee Shop, Contemporary, Coffee, Tea , Fast Food

Moustache Café is still somewhat of a local secret, tucked between Mile-Ex and Little Italy. The café has a warm and inviting atmosphere, with vegan smoothies and juices, sweet and savory snacks, and sandwiches they whip up on the spot. There are also a variety of coffee options from which to choose. There’s a large communal table where customers most often spend their time working and studying.

5. Cafe Guerrero

Cafe Guerrero is a small lunch café that offers tasty salads and other healthy eats that change daily. There’s always a meat dish, a vegetarian option, daily selection of sandwiches, freshly made soups, house chili, and an assortment of homemade baked goods. There’s seating if you want to eat in and relax, or you can take your food to go. There’s even the option to order online so that your food is ready for pick-up when you arrive.

6. Café District

Cafe, Canadian, Dessert, Pastries, Fast Food

A neighborhood favorite, Café District sits in Mile-End, Mile-Ex, and Rosemont, as well as in the Old Port. You can enjoy a light lunch with your cappuccino as you work on an assignment or chat with friends, and the service is always warm and friendly.
