Quebec is a very family-friendly and extremely safe destination with interactive museums and fun shopping. The old part of the city is completely walkable with many attractions located close to each other. Typical of most Canadian cities, there is ample green space and as many activities in winter as in summer.

Quebec City can have a few very hot, humid days each year, but generally it is a cool city with a wind coming up the river. While almost all services are available in English, Quebec is overwhelmingly French-speaking. This offers children the opportunity to try a few words like s’il vous plaît (please) and merci (thank you).

Fortification Walls

Historical Landmark, Architectural Landmark

The entire wall system around Vieux-Québec is 2.9mi (4.6km) long and can be walked, either on top or on adjacent paths. This is a fun activity offering spectacular views of the Saint Lawrence River and the Old City of Quebec, and there are also many interpretive panels along the walk. Quebec takes its history seriously, and the walls have been meticulously restored.

Museum of Civilization

Museum

One of Quebec’s most popular attractions, the Musée de la Civilisation is located in the Basse-Ville (Lower Town) close to many other sights. It is educational and interactive with a discovery zone specifically designed for kids. Plan on at least two hours for your visit.

The Quebec City – Lévis Ferry

Natural Feature

The community of Lévis is located across the Saint Lawrence River from Quebec City, and a ferry runs frequently since the closest bridge is too far away. The ferry ride itself is enjoyable and offers the best perspective from which to photograph Le Château Frontenac perched atop the cliffs.

Quebec Aquarium

Aquarium

Located in the Saint-Louis area, near the easternmost bridges to cross the Saint Lawrence, Quebec’s Aquarium is home to over 10,000 marine species. This is a large 40-acre (16ha) facility with indoor and outdoor displays and a marine tunnel for more in-depth viewing. During the winter, the aquarium is decorated with thousands of LED lights.

Plains of Abraham, the Battlefields Park

Park

Where Britain won North America from France, the Battlefields Park area is now a large green space on the edge of Old Quebec. The military citadel can be visited, and visitors can enjoy the changing of the guard at 10am through the summer months. The park is ideal for walking, biking and roller-blading. For a little more exercise, find the stairs down to the river!

Méga Parc des Galeries de la Capitale

Amusement Park

Quebec can be rather rainy, and certainly cold and very snowy in the winter. As a result, the Méga Parc is a large indoor amusement park. This may not be the most cultural experience, but it’s definitely really fun for kids when the weather does not cooperate. The park is located on the north side of the city and is attached to the shopping centre. There are 18 rides and, of course, an ice rink.
