An easy 90 minutes from Banff, Calgary is often seen as just the gateway to the spectacular Rocky Mountains in Canada. But as the beating economic heart of Alberta, the growing city draws plenty of visitors in its own right. It’s a gorgeous summer destination, and the warmth brings annual events such as the Calgary Stampede rodeo, along with hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city. From green spaces to a robust food and music scene, there’s plenty more to enjoy. Here are some of the best vacation rentals to book in Calgary – sort your stay via Culture Trip.
Numerous self-contained suites are available in this modern high-rise at the north end of downtown Calgary. This means you’ll get more amenities than the average vacation rental, including access to a fitness center and an element of housekeeping. Expect chic apartments in a black and white design scheme, with plenty of small luxuries – jetted bathtubs, balconies and fireplaces. The location is great, too: Chinatown and Prince’s Island Park – in the middle of Bow River – are less than five minutes away on foot, while the Eau Claire Market mall is across the street for any necessities.
Here in Calgary’s Downtown East Village, these rental suites are the business for indie travelers: right alongside plentiful green spaces on Bow River, and close to attractions including Fort Calgary and the National Music Centre. This being a smart, new(ish) condo building, amenities are clean and impressive – take the rooftop terrace, the gym and the games room. As for the apartments, two bedrooms are standard: they’re tastefully laid out with gleaming kitchens and modern appliances, and balconies with views of the city or river.
This is a great option if you’re in town for an exhibition or a game: it’s practically next door to the BMO Centre, with its regular conventions and consumer shows, and also to Scotiabank Saddledome. Meanwhile, downtown Calgary is just a few blocks to the north. Various one- and two-bedroom condos are available for easy, low-key vacations, with spacious open-plan layouts, and muted design spruced up with splashes of color. You’ll also have access to building facilities including a fitness center.
This sharply modern condo building houses an attractive mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments, with balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows granting stellar views of the city. They’re well equipped with everything you could need for your stay: washer and dryer, a full kitchen with granite countertops and dishwasher, comfy sectional sofas and smart TVs. Access to building facilities – there’s a gym and a sauna – is part of the deal, and it’s conveniently situated near Stampede Park, the convention center and stadium.
Don’t need a whole apartment or house for yourself? Looking to save some dough? Brother Li has you covered. More a homestay than a vacation rental, it has private rooms in a spacious house, with free parking and a garden, and impressively affordable prices. Rooms sleep two or three, and you’ll have access to a full shared kitchen; bathrooms are shared, too. It’s located in a tranquil suburb about 9mi (15km) from downtown: a mall is close by, and while you’ll probably want a car, free bike rental is a welcome option.
Regal Suites is a sleek condo building tucked between Chinatown and Downtown East Village in Calgary: as a result, both neighborhoods and the downtown attractions are all within easy reach on foot. By way of a bonus, it’s also just a block away from the riverfront. Inside, you’ll find suites with balconies or patios and open-plan living and dining rooms, as well as kitchens with all the basics a self-caterer needs. Both one- and two-bedroom properties are available, flaunting smooth, unobtrusive designs.
This large apartment is for visitors wanting peace – it’s in Calgary’s Tuxedo Park neighborhood, a quiet area that’s within easy reach of downtown, a couple of kilometers away. It occupies an older, characterful brick building and interiors have been nicely spruced up with a bright paint job. The result is slightly retro yet utterly charming and homely. There’s a fireplace to huddle around during the cold Calgary winter, as well as cable TV, and a kitchen with all the bells and whistles, so you don’t have to brave the freezing outdoors.
Tranquil Tuxedo Park district is the setting for this three-bedroom favorite, which is in easy reach of a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes on Centre St North. Recently renovated, it has cozy features including a warming fireplace in the large living room, as well as a smart TV for hunker-down winter nights; when the weather’s better, the open-plan social areas open out to a patio and yard. Sleeping arrangements? Snug bedrooms each have comfortable double beds perfect for lazy lie-in mornings.
