The burger – juicy, meaty, with a bun toasted to perfection – has been America’s comfort food for years, but it’s also become a staple menu item in kitchens across the globe, with chefs creating innovative (and delicious) spins on this classic dish. If we’ve discovered one thing, it’s that it’s a great time to love the burger in Montreal. Here, we’ve singled out some of their best.

A grilled cheese sandwich + a burger. What’s not to like?

Jukebox Burgers

Whether it’s the classic or specialty burger of your dreams, you’re going to find what you’re looking for at Jukebox Burgers. Serving diner classics and old-fashioned ice cream desserts in flashy digs with a vintage ‘50s vibe, this burger spot’s got it all. The star burger though, is none other than The Hulk Burger, complete with a beef patty, lettuce, tomato and mayo sandwiched between two bacon grilled cheese sandwiches.

Patty melts on a brioche bun turned burger.

Deville Dinerbar

Burgers, meatloaf and rotisserie chicken are reimagined at Deville Dinerbar. Try the Louis Lunch Burger, a tribute to American diner patty melts – melted Swiss and cheddar cheese, shredded iceberg, creamy coleslaw, and Russian dressing atop two four-ounce beef patties sandwiched perfectly between two slices of grilled brioche bread. Grab that burger with one of their boozy milkshakes, and you’ll have the ultimate diner experience.

A fried egg makes any burger better.

Burger Bar

Brothers and businessmen Ari and Morris Baker opened Burger Bar in 2011, which quickly won over locals and the collegial crowd with its adventurous, stacked burgers and comfort fare, plus a complete list of cocktails and pitchers of your favorite drinks. The six-ounce Hangover Burger takes the cake here – it’s complete with an AAA beef patty, American cheese, smoked bacon, mini classic poutine, an over easy fried egg, caramelized onion and a finish of truffle oil. Added bonus; all of their burgers come with hand-cut French fries, coleslaw or mixed greens.

A mushroom burger.

Burger Royal

At Burger Royal, a farm-to-table burger joint, you can’t go wrong with any burger. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside – these burgers are seared at high temperatures on a flat top grill, which gives them their mouth-watering texture. Choose your favorite toppings or one of their recommended combinations to add on – otherwise, go to their burger of the month. Past ones have included an oven roasted maitake mushroom burger rolled in bacon and onion confit that was infused with fresh Kombu seaweed, smoked Gouda cheese, fresh watercress and their homemade Dr. Pepper barbecue sauce.

The secret to the perfect burger tends to lie with the chef.

Nouveau Palais

When restaurant owner Gita Seaton was hired to help revamp the old New Palace diner in late 2010, burgers weren’t exactly what she had in mind as their winning dish. But now, it’s exactly that which has made the number one seller off Nouveau Palais’ menu. Flavorful, textured and scrumptious, The Palace Burger alone is worth a trip to Montreal. Don’t miss it.
